Despite its promise, a slump in sales of the 1969 Ford Mustang Grande and Mach 1 indicated a shift in the car-buying market. Standard engine on the 1969 Mach 1 was 351 with 250 or an optional 290 bhp.

(A small number of Mach 1 Mustangs were special-ordered with a 427-cid engine.)
