I had the enjoyment of being 17 and driving a 1971 Thunderbird with the 429 thunderjet option, (mom's car) which in 1971 was rated at 425 HP the same as the police interceptor 429, so said the chilton manual. Through later years I have read several magazine articles on the old Thunderjet and they said that it's HP was way understated, (insurance reasons) and was closer to the the 500 hp range. All I know, is it would Smoke the tires longer and harder then most people with any sense would want to. But then again I was 17 and didn't have a lot of sense to begin with. SO I SMOKED THEM!!! Several times, till my Parents just happened to be uptown one day and saw me do it. After extracting a size 9 out of my AZZ. I was told by my father, you know who's buying the next pair of tires for the rear of your mother's Thunderbird!----- Me? You got it! Then he snickered and said I didn't know the old Thunderbird would do that. I said Dad there's a lot you don't know about your old Thunderbird!!! (PS I'd do it again in a heartbeat!)Awesome FORD"S FOREVER!!!
Ya Fords rock, I had a Galaxie 500 XL once with a 390 4V in it and it was an unbelievable tire smoker. Got me expelled from my JR year in HS for 1 week for burning the tires up on brand new asphalt in the school parking lot. Jam
Took me getting A's and B's on my following report card to get the keys back from Pops!
