General Motors says that it has awarded Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga a 2010 Chevrolet Corvette convertible in an effort to recognize the player’s “almost” perfect game yesterday.
Galarraga was one batter away from pitching a perfect game yesterday when the 27th Cleveland Indians batter stepped up to the plate and hit a routine “ball in the hole” between first and second bases. Despite Galarraga and first baseman Miguel Cabrera’s best efforts, an umpire called the Indians batter safe.
Later replays showed the umpire to be mistaken, but Galarraga still struck out the next batter to round out what ended up being a one-hitter.
The Corvette was presented to Galarraga today by GM’s North American president, Mark Reuss, who said that the player should be recognized for his achievements despite the umpire’s mistake. Reuss also thanked the Ilitch family, which owns the Tigers.
“It is only fitting we help give back for all the Ilitches have done for Detroit and to celebrate Armando’s pitching and sportsmanship during one of the most captivating evenings in Tigers history,” Reuss said in a statement released to the media.
BREAKING: Fox News is reporting that MLB commissioner Bud Selig has ruled that the call will not be reversed, effectively robbing Galarraga of a perfect game. Had the blown call been reversed, Galarraga’s perfect game would have been the third such game this season alone, and only the 21st perfect game in the modern era (post 1900).
