The 2nd digit is the assembly plant.
T = Metuchen, Nj.
F = Dearborn, Mi.
R = San Jose, Ca.

Not sure if dmv is going to be willing to change it.

I'm not sure where you're at, but If there is a Typo, which would make sense. You may have to take the car to the State Police, and have them verify the Vin before the DMV will change it. I had to do this on my School truck last year as someone had messed up the vin and my sticker got sent to the wrong school, so I couldn't get it licensed until I had the "Vin Verified".  Once again I emphasize that I don't know where you are, and laws vary a lot, state to state. Good Luck, keep us informed and we'll help all we can.

Is it the vin tag or the DMV registration or both that are incorrect?

no not the vin tag that wouldn't make sense,
The car itself has the "T" as it should, but the title has a "G" where the T should be in the 2nd position of the vin#
should be easy fix if you notice on the keys board the T is right above the G.
the G makes no sense it should be a T, R, or F to designate plant.
Thanks all.

Okay.  It's going to take efforts like JTS mentioned to straighten it out.  My 69 Mach1 was no longer in the DMV database because the PO didn't register or even non-op register it for more than 5 years.  I had to have a local police officer verify the VIN tag, make certain it was not stolen, and fill out a form from DMV.

Leaving it as is might create issues later on.
