72 sport lamp wires overheating

Could very easily be in the sockets themselves. That's what you said was glowing. Very likely the culprit. JTS 71 Mach1

Sweet. Think i will order 1 since they are about 20 bucks a piece to see if that will fix my problem. Thanks again. Will update when i get the socket hooked up.

Went to a mustang car show near Greenville, SC saturday. There was 1 green mach 1 there. Owners were real nice. chatted with them for over an hour. got to check out his wiring for his grille lamps to make sure mine looked similar.

How did you get on with this? If you still have problems I would be scouring wreckers. IIRC the fitting in the reversing light ('70) is the same as in the Sport Light so you may be able to solder new wires and globe contacts in. Solder joints and shrink sleeving.

71-72 sport light sockets have 2 wires power + ground
Reverse light sockets have 1 wire for power , socket is the ground
They will not work in a plastic grille

My bad. Try stop/tail fittings. Some time since I fixed the 'Sports' lights. Spent most of my time changing the reverse lights to double as rear (amber) flashers.

Still haven't had a chance to order the parts yet, but planning on doing soon. This winter has kept me loaded up working with no free time, but hopefully in the next few weeks i can get the sport lamps fixed. Wanting to take the car to mustang week in myrtle beach this summer, so gonna have to work on the car a bit.

Geez, that seems unusual (power to the backside, nothing in the socket). It may be the socket(s) but it seems funny that both sockets are not working. Sorry, not that much help.

Finally found some free time and 2 napa auto part stores with the harness ohio mustang posted about. Found 1034 bulbs at a bulb and battery store near my house. wired it up and they work :)
super happy they work. I really want to wire up a switch and hide it somewhere near the grille i can reach with my hands to turn the sport lamps on when the headlights aren't on. I still need to solder the wires and shrink wrap them right now i have them just connected with the wire connecters and then wrapped them with black electrical tape.

When i cut the original harness off, they both still smell like they caught on fire.
