I have noticed some Mach 1 seats have the release in the middle of the seat, Others, to the door side of the seat...why....

I hadn't noticed that. My 73 Convertible has the release on the side. My brother use to have a 73 Convertible with the power seat release, but it was still on the side.

I have a 71 Mach and the bucket seat back releases are in the middle.
Some mach 1 received mustang std seats as well as plain door panels and no lay down back seats . Mine is in the middle of the seat too . C.L.

71 seats have the center release
72 and 3 have the L & R release
I have have an early 72 with the center type though, so not sure of the change date.

Not all '71's had center catch lever. Cars built before 6-16-71 used the center catch lever. After that date, the outer side lever was used.

Was your car exported to Australia when it was new? Exported vehicles had some variations (different engine tuning, mandated safety features, emissions etc...). Being 38 years old, the seats might have been changed out sometime during it's life. Do your seats match the vehicles' trim code? When I removed the seats from my '71 mach during restoration, I noticed a sewn-on white cloth info. tag attached to the inside of the seat back cover. On the tag was 8-70. My car was built at the Metuchen NJ plant, 10-70. I believe the seat cover was produced August, 1970. Perhaps you could check inside the seat cover for this type of tag, but it would involve removing the cover from the seat (a real pain in the ass, and the seat cover could get damaged). All that said, I would surmise that the seats could have been changed somewhere along the way. In my opinion, it's not such a big deal whether they're outboard or center latch release, as long as they match. I've yet to see a judge at a car show pick the flyshit out of the pepper when it came to seat releases. If you figure this one out, let me know. gxr02190

No it was only brought out here last year. I don't think the covers are original but they do match the trim code.
