Great photos of the transectomy (removal of a transmission) Dr. Harris. The operation looks successful. It is pretty amazing you performed the entire procedure with the car still on the trailer.! Very impressive!

Thanks for the words of encouragement.
I figured that it was easier to lay on the trailer than on gravel and it was less work than reloading the car.
I lifted the motor with the engine hoist and then lifted the car with the hoist and did the old knees and press transmission removal.
The motor looks to be a 71 302 - so not original. The transplant will be a 93 302. Of course that will necessitate a 50 oz. flywheel, a distributor exchange (with gear), new normal rotation timing cover and water pump, front sump pan and oil pick up. What else am I missing?

Is the 1993 302 motor going to be rebuilt or simply cleaned up and installed as is? I only ask because those cylinder heads were not one of Ford's better pieces. So if they need more than the standard work to rebuild them it's sometimes better to get aftermarket heads.

Here's one to cause some consternation in the ranks!
The motor that came with the Mustang is a 1971 302 with a 160 tooth flywheel. Of course "everyone" knows that 302 flywheels are either 157 or 164 tooth count. No, I have not counted wrong and yes it is a Ford part. I know the reason but just thought that I would share the fact and stir the pot.
The motor I plan on putting in is a 1984 302 which uses a 50 ounce imbalance and will need a 157 tooth flywheel to fit the 3 speed bell housing and clutch application. Is Summit racing my best bet? Part # FMS-M-6375-B302 @ $139.97
I will upload pictures latter of the latest work; cleaning and reforming the severely bashed oil pan.

Is it because it's from a 6 cyl, I seem to remember something different about the six and the fact it had a different bendix/starter, I believe it had more teeth, which could result in a different flywheel???

I have found if Summit Racing or Jegs carries what you are looking for, they will have the lowest price for it. Plus, you cannot beat their shipping and return policies. Summit Racing is my first stop for parts, second is National Parts Depot. Summit now also carries all of Scott Drake's repro parts, with most being in stock. For used OEM or when NOS parts for 1969 and 1970 Mustangs my first choice is Perogie Enterprises.

So .. the mystery is that Ford originally made the 289 flywheel with a 160 tooth count but then changed to the 157 or 164.
According to Summit and the web, unless I find a period OEM ring gear or flywheel everything aftermarket since that time will be a 157 tooth count which is what replaces this stock part.
Of course the 302 I plan to use is a 1994 unit which uses the 50 ounce imbalance flywheel so my 28 ounce one is not a possibility anyway. The good news is that they do make a 302 flywheel with the 50 ounce imbalance and the smaller diameter 157 tooth count that will fit my clutch needs and within my smaller early bell housing.

A 1994 302 should be a hydraulic roller cam motor, which is good. During the rebuild there are a lot of cam choices depending on your needs. Plus you don't have to worry about the damaging the cam or a lifter(s) during that initial start-up and break-in period.
