Shocks
#1
I would like to replace the shocks on my 1969 Mach 1. It currently has Gabriel Striders. I like them, they have three adjustments, and are not a high pressure gas shock. The problem is last time I replaced my front coil springs one front shock would no longer adjust and the other front shock had the threads get pulled off one of the lower studs when I removed the nut. Gabriel Striders are no longer made so now I need 4 shocks.

Any suggestions for a reasonably low cost shock? I drive the car fairly easy so I don't want to spend the high dollar for Koni or Bilstein shocks. And preferably not a high pressure gas shock since I have fairly high rate springs, 600 lb. inch front and 205 lb./inch rear. Anybody use just stock replacement shocks like from Monroe? Scott Drake has some nice looking shocks but it's not clear if they are a high pressure KYB Gas-a-Just made for Scott Drake or not. Opinions?

Thanks,

Mike

I finally decided to go with new Koni STR.T street shocks.  I've always wanted Koni shocks and they recently released a new lower cost line of non adjustable street shocks.  They are much more robust with larger diameter bodies, pistons, and rods them anything else I've seen in the $45-$55 price range.  They are gas charged, but not high pressure like a KYB Gas-A-Just.  So far I like them.

It's amazing the way a new set of shocks can change the feel, Thumbup and sometimes the personality of a car. Especially our old Mustangs as their suspension wasn't the absolute greatest when they were new. Good Luck

The Koni STR.T's must of came out after I purchased my KYB's because I would have definitely picked a set for that price.  I actually have the poor man Koni shocks.  They are KYB's painted orange.  I refer to them as Phoni Koni's!  I have no complaints about the ride with them.

You could have also got the Scott Drake shocks.  They are KYB Gas-a-Just and already painted a reddish/orange color.

Interesting, I didn't know Scott Drake offered shocks too.  Where did you see they are KYB shocks?

Bilstein are good shocks.  First, they were too pricey for what I wanted.  Second, Bilsteins were original equipment on most GM cars and trucks back in the 1980's and 1990's. In my mind I associate Bilstein with General Motors.  Therefore, I didn't want GM shocks on my Ford.

I recently saw a video that had the owner of Eaton Detroit Springs. They have been making springs for the automotive industry for a hundred years. He said that our spring/shock system was designed for hydraulic shocks, not gas. I agree with the above comments that Bilsteins are great shocks
