Power Steering Fluid
#1
While working on my trans I noticed my new Borgeson power steering box is seeping a small amount of fluid at a seam where the input shaft housing bolts to the main body of the steering box. Borgeson told me there is a 3 year warranty. But shipping back and forth might be a pain and expensive.

Question: The steering box had what looked like trans fluid in it when I removed the shipping plugs from the hose fittings. I filled the power steering system with Valvoline power steering fluid. Should I have used trans fluid? Does trans fluid have less tendency to leak? Type F or simply Dextron trans fluid? Borgeson was no help with fluids.

I'd say I'd never do this Borgeson conversion again. But the original power steering on these cars was terrible.

ATF was used and recommended for all steering systems back in the day, and is still used to some extent. While it sure wont hurt anything. It is an excellent, very fine and creeping lubricant. So if there is the tiniest of spaces, ATF will find it's way through, and drip, drip, drip. The later actual Power steering fluid that is sort of gray in color is a little thicker and might not seep through as easily as ATF. From the sounds of it you have a problem fixing to rear it's ugly head. Did you by chance try to tighten the bolts???

I checked the bolts when it was on the bench before installing it. I'll check them again. On the bench I didn't pull very hard on the wrench and they are fairly large bolts. I've read others having leaking issues on these steering boxes. Probably a quality control issue.

It's not too difficult to remove, a couple of hours work. Borgeson is in South Carolina so the shipping cost and time from the west coast might be expensive and slow.

Yeah I gotcha, a pain in the AZZ. It seems to be going that way more, and more. I read your other post, where you stated, "It is what it is!" I hate that statement!! Cause it means I can't do anything about it! and that sucks!!!!! I'm old enough to remember a time where companies started enlarging there inventories to have parts/things on the shelf. CAUSE MAIL ORDER SUCKED! and if something was wrong, you had to send it back! Costing you valuable time, money, and loss of use.(did you know you can actually sue for loss of use). Now because of Ebay, Amazon, and E Commerce in general. We have gone back to Mail Order, and guess what it still SUCKS!!! Not to mention what E commerce has done to the small businesses, and the brick and mortar businesses that are disappearing because of it. Some times technology isn't the cure all, people think it is. In some ways I think we've regressed instead of moving forward.

Just my thoughts JTS
