32 year journey
#1
Just thought I would share a few pics from the 32 journey of my Mach 1. My Dad let my brothers and I have any car we wanted as long as we had to restore it. When it got around to me, we found my 1970 Mach 1 in 1984 and it needed significant exterior work, but little in the way of engine or interior work. It was my car through High School.

I had heard too many stories from old men lamenting having sold their first car, so when I went to college it went to the barn. It did two different tours of duty in the barn before I had facilities where I could work on it again. About 5 years ago marked the end of its second (and last) barn sentence and I promised my son he could drive it to Prom some day. He was in 8th grade at the time.

The second barn sentence was not good as mice had gotten into the interior, the brakes had seized, and it had a bad gas leak near the carb. I got serious about keeping my Prom promise in November of 2015 and my son and I worked on getting it ready for his Senior Prom, which was last Saturday. It still has a few exterior things I want to freshen up on the "re-restoration", but it is in better shape than it ever has been in my ownership of it. Our work to get it ready for last weekend included: rebuilding the carb, rebuilding all of the brakes, new exhaust, new front spoiler, touch-up paint, new floor pans and torque boxes (both sides), new carpet and seat covers, new dash, fresh vinyl dye on all interior pieces, and a new headliner. Most importantly we eradicated all signs and smells of the mice! I also splurged and got 15x8 Magnum 500 wheels with P245 60R15 tires all around. I'm going to try to attach some pictures from my 32 year history with the car.

Got some good advice on this forum and lots of parts from Ohio Mustang and Dallas Mustang. I waited too long to get it back on the road, but glad I did.

Thank you for sharing your story. Its always great when your kids take an interest to help preserve the hobby!! My 31 year journey with my 65 is very similar (I didn't know mice had a taste for the cardboard glove box, but they ate have of it in storage ). Since I have it road worthy again it has been to a couple of relatives proms and going again in two weeks. Nice 70 by the way : )

Thanks for sharing your story and for the photos to match.

At least you do not have to lament having sold that first car and what's more your own son now has great memories of the same!

Cool Deal all the way around. Now you can make lots more memories of your own. May it never see the barn again! JTS 71 Mach1

Great story...I would guess that most people would have sold the car somewhere along the 32 year journey. I am glad you didn't.

The car looks great...nice job!

Rebuilding the carb, rebuilding all of the brakes, new exhaust, new front spoiler, touch-up paint, new floor pans and torque boxes , new carpet and seat covers, new dash, fresh vinyl dye on all interior pieces, and a new headliner, new wheels and tires. More than a few thousand dollars.
Spending time with your kids and allowing your son to have the coolest car at the prom. PRICELESS.
Great story, thanks for sharing.
