Resurrecting a 30 year old 460.

The heads have the DOVE-C cast into the heads. The engine is actually in a 71 Lincoln Continental. And the guy I bought it from knew the car since new, after a fender bender he purchased the car to use the chassis under an old Suburban which never happened. So it sat for 30 years and was left untouched. I don't believe it's ever been apart it, everthing has an even coat of rust, dirt, grime, rat crap, etc. It would be damn hard to fake this much Patina! LOL. I agree with the mild head work, cam, good carburetion, approx 1000 CFM, etc it should produce well over 500 Hp. Muscle Mustang and Fast Ford Magazine did an Article on a 71 Thunderbird 429 Thunderjet "survivor" They put it on the Dyno and got 494 Hp. and I think 503 torque? I'm 100% sure about the horsepower #. The biggest difference between the Lincoln and the TBird was the cam. I ran around in a 71 TBird with the 429 Thunderjet, (Mom's car) the exhaust had a sharp curt sound to it and the 71 Lincoln my boss owned was virtually silent, the cam was so mild there wasn't even a hint of rumble or lope. Everything else between the engines were virtually the same. My Lincoln is a 460 and was rated the same as the TBird's 429, I've always looked at Hp ratings kinda tongue in cheek so to say. I simply know how much fun that 71 Tbird was, and how far it would spin the tires! It was the first car I drove that would do a legit burn out, no neutral drop, no brake torque. Just mash it to the floor. It looked like US 30 Drag Strip! Hot Rod had an article on the Engine masters challenge a couple months ago, and A 460 BBF. won top honors with 871 HP naturally aspirated, so the potential is there. Wish me Luck. JTS 71 Mach1

Well my story is I had a new 460 for a project that got scraped, and my friend had a 429 with a bad cylinder. So with out doing any research we put this engine together. Little did we know what a beast we had built. Then removed the tired 351w and shoehorned it into a 69 Mach 1. Rolling down the street in third gear without effort we can spin the tires, almost not a fun car to drive. That's Why I put the caution sign up. Seems You have done your home work and know what a beast your building. Good luck and post pictures. Cheers J

Hey J somehow I missed your post. And yes I know I'm creating. A MONSTER!!! I can't wait. That 71 Tbird taught me about Big Block HP and torque. My 71 Mach1 351 C was 500+HP, and was pretty radical. It was a frickin blast to drive, and as you stated a little hard to handle, but oh what fun trying. It's been about 30 years since I got rid of my Mach1. The 5 kids are grown, and now it's time for Daddy to PLAY!
I want to pull into the local car show's, Smoke the tires from one end of the parking lot to the other, then get out with the biggest grin. And dare them Chivy Lover's to do the same! LOL! JTS 71 Mach1

Well I pulled the V12 out of the Jag, and damn what a hole! If I cant put a 460 in there I better quit trying. I had researched on the internet, and was never able to get a good picture of the engine compartment, without the V12 . Damn what a hole! Then after I recovered from that, I walked back into the shop and looked at the 2 motors/transmissions sitting across from each other and the V12 completely dwarfs the 460 in virtually all dimensions, except the height from the oil pan to the carb. The 460 is roughly 4 to 5 inches taller. And no I'm not sticking one of those damn "Cowl Induction Scoops on it". I'll post some pics in the next couple days. JTS 71 Mach1

Well Guy's my computer stupidity is showing I inadvertently put a picture of the V12 from the topin my last post. Well now I'm adding the pics I was intending to put in in the first place. Geez I hate computers! JTS 71 Mach1

I am glad to see your project is moving along. That is definitely a big compartment. If Evel Knievel were still with us I would challenge him to make that jump (LOL)!

You're a motivated man!

So the fun has begun!

What is the weight difference between the two motors?
