Hi

I need a new timing plate for the 351c, Ive seen aluminium covers on ebay. Whats the best choice here ? steel or aluminium ? If steel is to prefer, where can I get one ?

They are all aluminum. To my knowledge they never made a steel timing cover. Way to complex a shape to stamp out of steel. JTS 71 Mach1

Rob - I believe that you are talking about the flat cover that goes over the timing chain and under the water pump. If so, they are steel.

I believe that a steel replacement would be better than an aluminum replacement in that the difference between the two pieces sandwiched together causes galvanic corrosion. The exception might be if you plan to use an aluminum water pump.

OH Crap! I was thinking of a Windsor motor. Thanks for the correction Steven As I had a "Blonde" moment there. JTS 71 Mach1

Hi

Its one like this

Regards Rob

Yeah that's what they look like, and all the original ones are steel. Other then the chance for corrosion as Steven mentioned. It should work without an issue, as many of our parts, valve covers, intakes, etc. Are made from aluminum anyway. If you want it to stay looking good, spray the side facing out with clear or paint it like the engine, your choice. JTS 71 Mach1

Yes, the aluminum will do the trick.

Ford used the aluminum with the Windsor motors and galvanic corrosion was not and issue because of gasket separation as long as proper coolant life was maintained.

The aluminum could add a level of "bling" if it is desired or be painted to blend in if the bling is not desired. Availability and price become the only considerations.
