That's what I thought. But I never personally owned one so wasn't 100% certain they don't use a specific oil.

Mike,
If you are looking for plain old 80w90 go to your Ford Dealer. I stock it and sell it for $5.99 a quart. Part number XY80W90QL. Biggrin

Thanks Black Jade...the obvious did not even cross my mind. After a little more research I am going to gamble on the High Performance Valvoline 80w-90 without adding any additional additive.
I drained the oil today and filled it up using the High Performance Valvoline 80w-90. I took the car for a ride and did not hear an funny noises (knock on wood) and was able to launch with both tires spinning. I will still give it some more time to let the oil work itself in before I conclude.

No rear axle or transmission manufacturer recommend anything other than a good quality oil of the grade in the handbook.

Good, clean, fresh oil YES. Additives ??

Most of the time you will get clutch chatter when cornering without a friction modifier on clutch type limited slip differentials. As far back as the mid 1980's, maybe farther back, Ford and GM have sold a friction modifier additive to prevent clutch chatter. It looks like now some gear oils include the additive. I vaguely recall on the older gear oils without an additive or adding a separate additive, the gear oil had to be changed much more frequently because of clutch chatter.

When I took the car out I did some light cornering and turned around in a parking lot and did not hear any chattering. Maybe not hard enough to stimulate any clutch chatter. Anyway, I am keeping my fingers crossed that the Valvoline High Performance oil does the job. After all, it ends up being about $10 cheaper if I don't have to buy the additive.

Actually it will probably be fine with the type of gear oil you filled it with. Back when gear oils did not specify for suitable for limited slip differentials is when I know there were chattering issues. When I worked at a GM dealership I must have changed gear oil and added friction modifier to limited slip rear axles on at least 500 newer cars and trucks. During manufacturing GM did not add an additive and after a few thousand miles the clutches would chatter. Changing gear oil and adding the friction modifier was the fix. I knew the service manager at the local Ford dealer during that time and I guess Ford had the same issues.

It is interesting to know that the manufacturer did not add the additive. Did they forget or was it not known yet that the limited slips rear ends would require the friction modifier?

I understood they did not know there would be an issue. There was a TSB, technical service bulletin, for the issue. Like I mentioned, it took a few thousand miles before it would start. For a while it seemed there were two or three cars or trucks in the shop each day because of clutch chatter. I don't know if clutch chatter was an issue on late 60's early 70's cars and trucks. I'm not quite old enough to have been working on them back then.

Believe me, there were a lot of issues that popped up after the cars were on the road for a while. There were many binders filled with TSB's. The general public only gets notified of safety related issues.

Mike
