My reply was not meant to be snappy. Apparently you know quite a bit. I enjoy reading your informative posts. You have a lot if insight.
Pardon my skepticism, but Ford built 1,806 Boss 351 mustangs. Approximately 550 of those are accounted for to this day. So that leaves approx. 1,250 un-accounted for. Out of those, I would have to guess that almost all of them were either crashed or rotted away and were crushed years ago. Yes, I said crushed. And no, not all of them had their engines removed before they were crushed. Back then, they were just another worn-out or damaged car. Of course, Ford made more Boss 351 engines than cars - they had to - for warranty purposes, but there aren't that many to mention. I'm sure not all of those are lurking in garages somewhere waiting to sprout up like daisies for some lucky mustang enthusiast.

Here are some pictures of some pictures i took in 1987 when i pulled it apart and found 2 broken cylinder heads...(maybe thats why it was removed from the car??)

here is a picture of the engine now...
I have it on the cherry picker i will pull the pan this weekend..
I seem to remember it had 4 bolt mains in 87 when i had it apart and replaced the main bearings...unfortunately i didn't take a picture of the bottom end at that time...

Well, it looks like a hydraulic 351-4V, either 70 or 71. Those rocker arms are the positive stop fulcrum type, non-adjustable. Regular crank dampner and what looks to be a single point distributor. It'll be interesting to see what's under that oil pan.

D0AE-L is a BOSS 351 block it should have 4 bolt mains

Just because the engine has 4-bolt mains doesn't mean it's a 351-Boss block. I am pretty sure about my brother's old car engine numbers as he documented this information. I even have the V.I.N. recorded :1F02R200071. Car was built in Dearborn, May, 1971 and delivered to a dealership in the Boston Metro area. They're rare, but I know there were Clevelands with 4-bolt mains manufactured in 1971 as I have seen photos of them in tech. articles.(No, they weren't '72-'73 CJ's) Yes, they had the DOAE casting.Huh After calling my brother to verify, he stated that the D1ZE was stamped into the block, and not cast. Now I'm getting confused............

It is not because it is a 4 bolt main
It is because it is an L block within the 1971 date code range for the 71 BOSS motors
No 351Cleveland blocks had a D1 casting number
They went from D0 to D2

Other than the 4 bolt main BOSS blocks I have never seen or heard of a 70 or 71 4 bolt main block - the exception is when they switched to the Q code vin in late 71 - that was basically a 72 motor
They went from D0 to D2

No problem. I didn't take it to be snappy. Clearly, I haven't been around Clevelands much and was unclear of the Boss 351 configuration. I've only tinkered with a couple of Clevelands. One was in a friends 67 Fairlane that was bracket raced. Sorry to say, fairly fast but broke valve train component every weekend. The other was a motor build that never materialized for a 69 Fastback Mustang. The second motor was in fact a 4 bolt main but positive it wasn't a Boss motor.

After reading through this thread, I'm inclined to think it is not a Boss motor.

Best Regards,
Mike

Ok, here's where we're at: As evidenced by Ohiomustang's documentation AND bobdalogger's post, Ford used the DOAE-L casting for it's Boss 351 engine. That's pretty apparent. Ohiomustang states he knows of no other '70 or '71 non-Boss 351's that were manufactured in a 4-bolt main configuration. I will copy and paste an article that clearly shows a non-Boss 351 (70 or 71) being rebuilt and it has 4-bolt mains that the author claims was original - not machined and added later. Ohiomustang's post also shows the DOAE-L casting was used in the 2-bolt configuration. So.... we're still waiting to see a pic of that lower end. If it's a 2-bolt block, no surprise. If it's a 4-bolt block, bobdalogger has a Boss part, not a Boss engine - as none of the other parts I see in the photos are Boss items. To be continued................

Hopefully somebody will know for certain if 4-bolt Clevelands were used on non-Boss motors. Which I think is the case.

I don't know, and I may be wrong, but even if it is a 4-bolt main block and was used in Boss motors, doesn't the casting number beginning with D0 indicate it wasn't a specific designed Boss item since those went into production in 1971? In other words, if you have a Ford cast part specific and unique to 197X. The casting number (not the date code) will not indicate a prior year design. At least that is what I have noticed.

Mike

I like your logic...and agree with you!!
I took some pictures of the air intake numbers and the exhaust numbers...
I see the DOAE in the numbers..
Does this mean I now have 3 BOSS parts??
Man there is allot of parts still to go..lol
