Hi
I tried to start my car today and nothing when I turned the key. So I checked the connectors on the black box as shown in my hand. Took them out and refitted them. The car started but the Engine didnt run well at all. I tried to shut down the Engine but it nearly wouldnt. I tried to start it again and it sounded like a machine gun. Whats going on here ?
There is one wire that is cut but I cant find the other half..maybe radio anti disturber .. Look at the Picture. Can this box make the entire Engine run bad ?

The box you are holding is the voltage regulator. I don't know what that could have had to do with the no start issue, as it's not part of that system? It simply regulates how much charging current the battery receives and to maintain the electrical components/ load while the engine is running. Just judging from the pictures, you could start by removing the wires from the starter solenoid (one side at a time) and cleaning the connections, that could be where the no start issue came from, and you may have bumped, or wiggled the connections which got it to start. Don' forget to clean the little push on connector on the solenoid as that is the wire from the key switch, and has more then once caused a no start issue. Hope it helps if not give some more details and we'll try again. JTS 71 Mach1

And use a decent switch cleaner on the terminals. Wurth brand is the best I have found so far.

Thanks, Im getting a new solenoid and regulator tomorrow. Somebody who gave the car a paint job , painted wires and connectors
Why did it run bad ? I mean if starts it should run normally it the regulator doesnt charge the battery that shouldent really matter. Does the distrbutor pick up voltage from the solenoid ?

It's difficult to determine why it is running bad. You could have multiple issue.
- Battery voltage too low, but not likely if it cranks over okay.
- Carburetor needs rebuilding from old age or even if its new and has been sitting for a while. These cars usually don't get driven much and as the fuel in the carb evaporates a varnish film starts building up inside all the passages.
- Simply old fuel can cause a bad running engine. Todays pump gas goes bad faster than most think. A month or two and it is getting bad.
- Car needs a tune up.
- Vacuum leak finally cropped up.
- Hydraulic lifters bled down. Although lifter tick noise is also associated with that.
- I'm sure there are many other possible causes.
If it still runs bad after getting the voltage regulator and starter solenoid issues are straightened out. First check the tune up condition. Make certain all vacuum hoses are good, intake manifold bolts and carb mounting bolts are properly torqued. Check the fuel. If bad fuel is the culprit, along with draining all of the bad fuel and blowing out the fuel lines, I would also rebuild the carb if it were my car.
Good luck. These thing are usually not difficult to sort out.
Best Regards,
Mike

OK
Here is the situation installed new voltage regulator, solenoid , new battery but still the same trrrrrrrr sound from the starter when turning the key.
I replaced the blown fuse for the cluster instrument, now when I dim the lights the lamp in the center console dims with it. Should it be like that ?
What could cause this ? ignition key ? Could it be a short that creates this or is the starter broken ?
Can something in the electrical system create this ?

Yes that light should dim with the other dash lights. It sounds like the starter could be your next problem. JTS 71 Mach1

Think about this for a minute.......No charge condition, car started after possibly disturbing a connection near the battery, low voltage to the solenoid, I would replace the battery's positive cable. A defective battery cable doesn't always look defective. Do an ohms test on the cable to check it's resistance to current flow. (Or just replace the cable as they aren't very expensive). Check the ground cable that bolts to the block. Check for tight, clean connections, especially where it bolts to the engine block. When checking for bad electrical connections, it's always best to start at the power source and work toward the end of the circuit.
