Yeah, the dealer selling old inventory isn't good. Thanks to this thread, I now know how to interpret the date code and will check it when buying new tires.

I just bought new Cooper Cobra GT tires and I told the salesman I wanted to see the date of manufacture. He said no problem but said very few customers ever ask to see them or are even concerned about that. I explained what had transpired before and he was not surprised.

I always go back to the same place for my tires. I can't wait to see their response when I ask the same question.

Something that has failed to be mentioned is that the 5 years is the last date that tire can be sold as new. It does not necessarily indicate that it is a Junk tire. Now if it's been in front of a tire store in the sun for 5 years, I would expect some deterioration, If kept inside out of direct sunlight it is considered as good as new. Ultra violet light is the enemy of tires, with sunlight being the worst. So just cause the date is a little old it doesn't necessarily mean it's junk. JTS 71 Mach1

It maybe alright to sell a tire that's 5 years old as new as far as the tire condition is concerned but I recently was informed that the state of Massachusetts is going to be checking tire age in its yearly safety inspection and tires exceeding 10 years of age will fail. If this is true as a consumer I would be rather pissed if I bought them NEW only 5 years ago and now I have to replace them only because of age and not due to wear. As a consumer I expect to be told if something I'm buying as new is anything but new. It's only the fair and honest thing to do. In my case the tires were well past due to be replaced and I just lost track of time and didn't realize because of lack of wear how old they were. Most people wear out a tire long before it reaches it age limits but guys in the classic car hobby are the people most likely to have age issues and not wear issues. I was just firing a warning shot to those people including myself to be more age aware when it comes to the tires on your classic car.
