Rear ended...?
#1
I've got a 72 Mach 1 Q code. When I bought it the owner didn't know much of it's history. I was able to contact the second previous owner who gave me more info. not all of which has been correct or at least uncertain. The car came factory with a 9" 3.25 trac-loc. This I know (Marti report) The 2nd owner said he had changed out the third member with one from a bronco because the bronc. had a 3.70 ratio trac-loc. My research has showed that the 3.70 ratio was not available from the factory.
However, he didn't say the gears were stock. He did say he used to run the car on the strip from time to time. This spring I'm having the rear end rebuilt but I want to make sure that the third member case is strong. Not necessarily "N" strong but not one of the weaker (WAR?) cases. I know a lot of Fords came with the small bearing 28 spline C7AW-E case. The I.D. tag is long gone does anyone have any suggestions which 3rd member would be best without going overboard, I plan to keep it at, or below, 400 hp. What stampings should I look for & where are they located? If it comes down to it I may just get a new case from Strange. I appreciate any and all input, positive, negative, or just to say "WHAT"?
Your friend,
Keith S.

P.S. I like to drive my car often I even drove to it to the local store last week. It was 20 degrees out but the roads were clear so I figured "Why not?".

The C7AW-E case should be fine for use up to 400 hp. Just make sure it has no cracks to begin with. They have a higher nickel content than the "WAR" cases which were known to crack around the inner pinion bearing support under extreme use. IMHO, you're more likely to break a stock traction lock differential cover or "hat" than break a housing. But, if you break the diff, the resulting carnage will usually take out the gears and inner support anyway. Your best bet would be to purchase a new traction lok unit from Summit or Ford Racing which is engineered stronger in critical areas, and install it with your gears in a good C7AW-E case. It'll be strong enough for 400hp, and it won't empty your bank account.
