1969 mach 1 rear window leak
#1
hey guys,

My rear window leaks when it rains. I can see where a piece of window seal is missing. There a gap in a few places also between chrome trim and window seal. It appears the window seal has shrunk through the years. This is an easy fix with black caulking silicone. My question is, should I attempt to caulk around the entire window seal in an attempt to make the seal better? I can tape the chrome trim and window to keep the job neat but would like some advise.

I imagine that if you do not plan to replace the whole window seal that yes, I would recommend caulking around the whole seal as insurance of a leak proof fit. You may have to do both the seal to body and the seal to glass.

Sorry - I wouldn't know what it might cost.

Someone else may jump in with experience on that detail.

It is a basic glass install job but there are a few "old school" tricks to doing it right. That a those back glasses are not cheap if broken.

I would think it shouldn't cost more then $100.00 bucks to get it resealed. what could cost a little is the seal kit itself. Check around the Mustang suppliers, Cj pony parts, Macs classic antiques, and several others, and see what an install kit costs. Don at Ohio Mustang is a member here and should be able to provide you with more help. He'll be along shortly. JTS 71 Mach1

Safelite Auto Glass will do it for about 120.00 but you will need to provide the New rubber gasket.
You will also have to schedule it to be done at the shop rather than your house.
It takes Urethane per DOT standards now a days and not black Silicone.
3M also makes a product called bedding and glazing compound (part # 08509) that is used in some installations with the Urethane.

Silicone breaks down when in contact with rubber.

Fix it properly and dont just put lipstick on the pig I always say.Biggrin

Be careful with your original stainless steel rear window trim because it is about $400.00 to replace the trim on your car.Crazy

My $0.02 - Get a new rubber seal. You will be better pleased with the job in the long term.
