I own a 1972 Mach1 and like many owners of 72 and 73 mustangs I bought an NOS 71 pop off cap. The gas cap it replaced I believe to be original had an attaching wire like most of the Mustangs built before 72 but I've read a few articles lately that state in 72 the wire was no more. Does anybody know when Ford stopped using the attaching wire and why did they?

That is beyond my limit of Mustang trivia but surely someone knows.

I don't have the facts in front of me right now, but if memory serves me correct the attaching wire was used in the 69 & 70 model years.

1970 was the last year for the retaining wire/ loop on the standard screw-on gas cap. No 71-2-3 came with a retaining wire.
