Hello all! my name is Chris, and I am from near Madison WI, I am new to this site. I have gotten involved in helping my uncle work on his 69 Mach 1 351 4-speed drag pack. The car needs work, but he ordered the car in Veitnam. It has been stored for a long time and the original carb had the butterfly shafts seize up. No good! We were going to swap out for a Holley. thinking about a Holley model 4160 600cfm electric choke carb. are we thinking right? are we going to need special throttle cable brackets etc. to make this carb work?

Welcome Chris, you are lucky to be working on such a cool car. since its a 69 i am going to assume that is a 351 Windsor engine. From personal experience i have not had very good luck with the Holley 600. vacuum secondary. I have had very good luck with the holly 650 double pumper though. Seems to work very well on the 351/302 Windsor family of engines. If bye some chance u have a 351 Cleavland or 428 cj or even a 390 the the carburetor would be a Holley 750 to 850 DP. all day long. it will add almost 40 hp to those engines. But be sure because too much can be bad. good luck John from pa.

Welcome to the club Chris. I agree with j-cobb9 about carb. choice. You mentioned that it is a Drag Pack car. Did it have a 428 engine originally? What do you have for rear end ratio?

I'm not sure of the rear gear but my uncle ordered the car with the 351 and drag pack. (most likely a rare combo) He did not want the big block at the time, because with the big block came power steering and power brakes. (all power to the wheels)lol! he thinks a little different today.

Hello again, I inquired about if whether or not the vehicle was originally equipped with a 428CJ engine because the drag pack option was only available with the 428CJ. The "Drag Pack" option consisted of an external oil cooler mounted to the radiator support in front of the radiator, an oil cooler adaptor and hoses mounted to the engine block where the oil filter would normally go, special 427 cap screw connecting rods as opposed the standard 428 "press-fit" bolt and nut arrangement, a special crankshaft and flywheel, and a larger crankshaft balancer. It included a 3.91 to 1 traction-lok differential, or a 4.30 to 1 Detroit Automotive Products "locker" differential.(Although I've only seen the 4.30 locker set-up in 1970 mustangs) It seems that Ford was concerned about extended high r.p.m. operation with the 428CJ when these vehicles were equipped with 3.91 and 4.30 ratio rears, and added the package to make the 428 more durable at higher r.p.m.'s. If a customer ordered a 428CJ and specified either a 3.91 or 4.30 rear, they automatically got the drag pack option. It could be had with either a four speed manual or automatic transmission. A 351 car could be ordered with the 3.91 rear, but it was not a "drag pack" car because it wasn't a 428 and did not get all the other modifications. A lot of our club members have '69 and '70 cars, and would likely be more knowledgeable about the drag pack option offered those years. Drag pack cars are pretty scarce, since most 428 stangs (from what I'm told) were equipped with 3.25 or 3.50 gears. Drag Pack cars also came equipped with nodular iron differential carriers and 31-spline heavy duty axle shafts. So there you have it..... my long winded explanation of why I asked about the car's original engine and rear end.

Hi Chris,
This is my first post here. I also have a 69 Mach 1 with a 351W and 4sp setup. I also agree with j-cobb9. The Holley 650 DP carb is a good size for a stock 351W. I've run that carb on mine. I also have very good performance with a Holley 700 CFM DP which is what I am currently using. My motor is what I consider a typical mild performance build, and the Holley 700 DP seems to work well with it.
Are you using the stock cast iron intake manifold? I believe the Holley 650 DP's and larger have bigger throttle plates than the original Autolite carb. I am not certain if that will create any fitment issues. Somebody else here might know. I haven't tried a Holley on a stock cast iron 351W intake manifold.

The double pumper carb will work fine on a stock 351W iron intake as long as the carb is not a spread bore. However, you'll probably need a 1" spacer plate, especially if you have an auto. trans. so the kickdown linkage won't bind. Secondary throttle plates are same size.
