Remember that a few hundred extra in purchase price can save a few thousand in restoration costs.

Amen to that! JTS 71 Mach1

Agree with M1FF and JTS...don't be penny wise and pound foolish! I believe it was Steve Harris that a great point awhile back about spending a $1,000 on shipping can save you $5,000 on sheet metal and labor. He's 1,000 % correct!

i appreciate the info and yes that is the guy. My father and went last year and he is pretty pricey. Is finding a 71-73 Mach 1 for under $4k a realistic goal? I basically just want a shell.

Finding a 71-73 Mach 1 for under $4,000 is a realistic goal in the condition you desire. Here is southern Arizona you would be able to pick up a rust free example needing a complete interior replace and drive train rebuild.

Granted that priced car is not the norm and I do not know of any available at the current time but yes from time to time they are for sale. Normally it is the $7,000 to $8,000 cars that are available.

Just to give you an Idea, I live in NE arkansas, And bought a 72 Mach1. As you describe a shell, no engine or trans. Little bit of rust in floorboards but 95% solid. Gave $400.00, I also bought 2 complete cars, a 73 Mach1 460 and C6, that needs floors. and a 72 Fastback 302 and 3spd stick, that is a rust bucket, but very complete and runs. I gave $2000.00 for the pair off Ebay. So I have 3 cars and I easily have enough parts to build one Driver quality Mach1. and have a total investment of $2400.00. If you take a little time and some effort searching. They are still out there. That guy south of Little Rock, finds cars like I did, cleans them up slightly, and if someone comes along, he Gives them a "good deal", of BULL. He tried to talk me up, the couple times I went there, He just had no Idea I've been in this game for 30 years or better. So I could smell the Bull a long way off. Not trying to down the guy, Just letting you know he's in it to score big money, not help a guy out that wants a Mach1, Also watch the guy in Conway as he's even crazier. Hope it helps JTS 71 Mach1

Yup, those type of guys are out there. We have similar guys in CT doing the same thing, buying junk really low, waving their magic wand and selling high. All of a sudden their car is a hard to find, rare Mustang. You really need to take an experienced person with you when looking at these cars or you will be taken for a ride (no pun intended).

Thanks again. I'll post again when i find one.
this will also be my first restoration. Im very machanically challenged lol. So i'll have someone do the work for me. My father is also looking for a an older car to restore, and my grandfather is a mechanic but he's very old. So this might give us all some bonding time. I've seen a couple Mach 1's around here and they really turn heads everywhere I see them. I take it most of you are over your 40s?

Here's one listed on Ebay Its in Illinois.
eBay item number:

151461325608 It's kinda what you're looking for. You can see it has rust in the doors and rocker panels, to what extent is unsure from the pictures. Contact them if interested and they should be able to get you some more pictures. JTS 71 Mach1
PS I'm 56
