Welcome to the site! Please let us know a little bit more about your 73 Mach 1 restoration so we can offer some tips and guidance. What part of the car are you planning on starting with? Also, share some pictures, too. It is helpful to others to see what you are working with.

Will post some pictures soon enough and I'm gonna start on getting a new gas tank because the current one is filled with gas that over time formed into a tar like substance. That's pretty much all it needs to run but not to be driveable yet. I'm also stripping the interior to access rust damage and so far just need the rear seats out.

Welcome, starting with a new gas tank will cure a lot of problems. As you almost can't get one clean enough, once the tar has set in. Good luck ask any and all questions cause somebody here knows the answer. Smiliegenerator_test6 JTS 71 Mach1

Are you changing your fuel line along with the gas tank? There is a possibility the line can be just as bad as the tank itself. Generally, the fuel line is pretty easy to replace.

As Mike said clean / flush the line or replace it.
The sending unit will be gunked up to.
Also install a temporary external filter in the line before the carb
There will be [ usually rust ] particals you will miss.
Make sure you oil the motor before the first start up
