351c Distributor Siezed to Block
#1
When I first tried to set the timing on the daughter's Mach 1 I could not turn the distributor. I even thought there must be a second clamp! SCo_hmmthink
I ended up with a partial unit tear down in situ to get an oil filter strap wrench round it. While I did the strip down I kept soaking the area in the ATF/acetone mix.
The best 'unusual' tool I used in this task was a 1/4" wood chisel in the join. Metal chisel too blunt in comparison. VERY gentle tapping and keep tension on the oil filter strap back and forward.
Once it starts to move the rest quite easy as the lube gets in the join. Still took 2hours and lots of rude words though. Rolleyes

Great idea on how to get work that stubborn distributor out of there. We all get into situations like this from time to time and need to think outside of the box. I would not have thought of using a oil filter strap to work it out in this situation.

Thanks for sharing. I am sure your strategy will be used by someone.

Yes, great strategy.

That is a very common issue that stumps a lot of people and sells quite a few distributors.

Here's hoping that others take your approach for a better outcome.

Thanks for sharing.

Been there done that. Since the block was getting machined I took it to the the machinist to remove. Told him he would get an extra $50 to get it out in one piece as I wanted it date correct for a concourse restoration. I had spent many hours with ATF/Acetone and tapping from top and bottom. Motor was stripped down except for the stuck distributor and cam. I even tried some of the freeze products hoping the cold would shrink the metal enough to allow some lubricant in. Well the machinist got it out with only sacrificing the vaccum advance unit. We split the difference of $50 knowing I needed to now by a restored vaccum advance.
