The Mach 1

Found this article online today. Most of you have probably already seen it since it was published awhile ago. It provides a nice history of the Mach 1 and is an easy ready.

Being a bean counter myself, I did realize it was the accountant's who made such a significant contribution to the look of the 1970 Mach 1...cool!

Pretty good article. I had never seen that one before. I guess the bean counters won in 1970, with the less is more idea. In all actuality it doesn't usually work out that way. In 74 they cut the Mach1's cord so to say. Even though they were a better car (had one). They still felt like a refined Pinto. Not the big bold brutish Mach1's we were used to. So they got the status of a has been, almost from the beginning. I Never embraced the Fox body as It didn't have the feel either, it didn't even look like a Mustang of any year, YUCK. They just kept throwing performance at it to keep it ahead of the Camaro. Until Chevrolet Finally gave up. The Mach1's of 2003 and 2004 were the High lights of the era. Then they finally came up with the 2005 and it at least it looked like a Mustang. Its a much better car all the way around. Even though it is very refined for a Mustang. It can still have that brutish feel and performance. That easily rivals all of the late sixtys muscle cars and will blow many of them away. Now if they would just give us a Mach1 we'd all be happy. The fox bodies revived and kept the Mustang alive.
Some years look way better than other's though.

The highlights of 2003 - 2004 were the Mustang Cobra's
First mustang I ever had that would sit in traffic with the
A/C on, not over-heat - idle fine
Melt the tires in 3 of it's 6 gears, stop on a dime [ factory brembo's ]
and handle excellently - Ford de-tuned it to get down to 390 factory HP
With a cat back, K & N fresh air kit, pulley and a tune
they were over 500 rear wheel HP - Damn I miss that car Sad

Funny - I don't remember the Mach 1s having ANY metal [block or script] editions of the word "Mustang" anywhere on the car from '71-'73.

I agree, cause I sure don't remember any Metal badges on the 71-73 Mach1's??? If they had the metal script on the fender they were regular Mustangs, if I remember correctly. How about you Don, You've probably seen more Mustang's then any of us. Your thoughts? SCo_hmmthink If memory serves me right the 69/70 had the block letters across the trunklid. I just can't remember if they were removed on the Mach1's or not?????? JTS 71 Mach1
