Hello all,
just bought a 69 428cj mach 1, driven and parked (outside and covered) 25 years ago. Its all there but needs full restoration, which will begin after finding a good resto shop. In your opinion, will it lower the value of the car much if I change the interior color to black and the exterior to candy apple red. It came with gulfstream aqua and white interior and do not care for either. Thanks

WELCOME TO THE SITE
IN MY OPINION IT WILL DECREASE IN VALUE IF COLORS ARE CHANGED. IF YOU BOUGHT IT FOR INVESTMENT PURPOSES THEN DONT CHANGE THE COLOR. IF YOU BOUGHT IT TO DRIVE AND KEEP THEN PAINT IT ANY COLOR YOU WANT AND ENJOY

Yes, welcome! That is a tough question and Black Jade gave you a great response. The 69 428CJ is definitely a more desirable car so originality could be a factor in the value with some purists. With that said, if it is a number matching car except for the paint a potential buyer may be very interested getting their hands on a 69 big block car regardless.
What you may want to consider and may be a factor in its value is if the production numbers for the original color and interior combination is say 1 of 500 ( I am just throwing #'s out there) then I would consider possibly not changing the paint due to its rarity. You can get this information for your car from a Marti report. Me...I am not a Mustang purist by any means so changing the paint to a different color would not alter my decision on the car (unless it was pink) if I were in the market for the 428 CJ. Is it possible for you to upload a picture of the car in its current state? I would like to see the gulfstream aqua on the car.

Well now we know there were 50% fewer Gulfstream Aqua cars but that probably doesn't help you with your decision on changing the color. The car, regardless of the color, is already desirable by itself and I would assume it would be very difficult to quantify the decrease in value if you were to change colors. So if it were me, I would make it the car the color you would have wanted if you had bought the car brand new right off the lot. This way you will have no seconds thoughts or regrets after making the investment in a quality paint job.
Does anyone have another opinion?

Welcome.
In response to your question, "will it lower the value of the car" - yes. Add the next word "much" and it becomes much harder to answer.
Great advice has all ready been given on making it yours unless your in it for the resale. Still "IF" the car is done 100% right regardless of original color combination it will be worth more than a 100% original done poorly.
Enjoy the car, enjoy the color.

Wow, Gulfstream Aqua with white guts is my favorite color combo on 69s...you would probably like that combo a lot if you saw it in pristine condition.
However, that combo...especially the white interior...gives it a very 60s/70s look.
Black interiors seem to make our older cars seem a little less dated to most casual observers.
Just pick something nice, and it will rock!
