Yesterday, we changed the alternator, ac compressor, radiator, all the belts, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, water pump, fuel pump, voltage regulator, and relay.
We were going to do the power steering pump, and I bought one, but it just got to be to much, and we still needed to pull the pulleys. Since the PS is fine and I was just wanting to do it while the radiator and brackets were off, we decided to save it for another day.
Car runs great.
My question is this, and I asked this stuff on another website and nobody would answer or they hijack the thread and start talking about something different than what I asked.
So even though I dont have a Mach 1, my coupe is as close as it gets minus the fastback glass.
Does anyone know if the 72 Cleveland motors require a vented gas cap? I'm asking this because at speed, there's seems to be a surge or slight miss and if I take the cap off it has an unbelievable amount of pressure gas escaping. I haven't driven with the cap off because it has to much gas in it right now. So does it need a vented gas cap??

From what I've read the 71-73 gas caps are not vented. The venting is done through the charcoal canister under the hood. It should be under the hood and is a blue canister next to the shock tower brace and fire wall on the passenger side. Make sure the PO has not plugged up the line that runs back to the gas tank. The gas cap should not have pressure when you remove it.
Sounds like you got a lot of work done to make it a reliable ride! Keep us posted on your notch-Mach!

+ 1 - not vented - even though the 2 manufacturers of twist on caps make them vented ???

So can the canister be replaced? Not sure what to do here.
Any idea what might cause the surging or slight miss? Its not really a miss it so hard to explain. It seems to be right around 45 MPH, but will do it occasionally at all speeds.

I doubt the canister is the issue
It actually has a vent on the top as a fail safe.
Pull the hose going to the tank off the canister and test drive the car
If no change
Go to autozone, napa or anyplace
buy a cheap replacement metal twist on gas cap
Drill an 1/8 - 3/16 hole in it
put it on the car and drive it - that will eliminate the tank venting question

Yep definitely not a vented cap. Excessive pressure probably caused by a plugged vent line to canister as mentioned. The extra pressure shouldn't cause a surge or miss, as the pressure is simply making it easier for the fuel pump to pull the fuel from the tank. So I doubt it would be a fuel starvation issue? Some residual pressure is normal as I remember but it shouldn't be a lot??? Don was correct, if you drill a small hole in a cheap cap it will definetly answer the question about the surge, if it's related to the pressure or not. You may have to wait a while till you burn some gas, or it will run down the back of the car when you accelerate hard. Good Luck. JTS 71 Mach1

Thxs guys Ill look into trying some of these things. We also are going to look into replacing the carb. It has the Motorcraft 2100 carb, JUNK, and we are probably going to go with a Holley 500 or 600 cfm 2bbl. We think this is where the surge or miss is. Its got to be it or its a sticking valve.
I thought about switching the manifold and going with a 4 bbl edelbrock setup, but this car isn't a fast race car type to me, its a cruiser. Seems switching to 4bbl is only a gas eater on a car that eats gas pretty good with a 2bbl.

Glad to hear of all the love that the Grande is getting!
My apology for chiming in so late but it looks like you have been taken good care of. I did the four barrel switch but I wasn't too worried about originality and/or resale.
The word on the street is that you can actually get as good or perhaps slightly better economy with the proper sized four barrel BUT you have to keep your foot out of it - and that will be hard to do.

Steven which intake and carb did you use? I was going to go with the Edelbrock Performer intake and the Edelbrock 650 carb, but really didn't want to kill gas mileage. Seriously this 2bbl is not a sipper either.
I was also concerned with changing the motor to much since Im not rebuilding it, figured it would be better to let it stay stock so it lasted awhile. This car is nothing but a cruiser for me. What I like is when Im out usually everyone has the S197 body, its nice having something different even if a lot of Mustang guys don't like the big Mustangs. Ive actually thought about moving the driver seat track back a little to give me a little more room.
