I am looking at buying this 1972 Mach 1, which led me to this site to begin learning all I can about this model.
I don't have anything of value to share right now, since I'm a total newbie, but I look forward to researching here and becoming an active member if and when I take the plunge. I'm about 90% sure I'll be making the purchase, so I'm sure I'll be coming back here frequently.
Looks like the paint is "Grabber Lime" (Paint Code "I"), a 1971 color only. In 1972, Ford came out with a new color: "Bright Lime" (Paint Code 4E), easily mistaken for "Grabber Lime."
But, then again, the paint may be faded after all these years. Check the door jams for factory paint code info.
Car looks straight. How about the underside? Original motor? Tranny? Drivetrain? All the best wisdom to you in your final decision. Have fun!
Those are all very good questions to which I do not have answers at this point. I'm not even sure it isn't a 71 since we made the initial agreement after several beers (Foster's coincidentally, lol).
Full disclosure, my brother-in-law does classic car restorations and has been sitting on this Mach 1 for a while having bought it for a song last year. I'm doing a swap for it, and I'm going up next week to look it over, assess the parts/labor to get it running/looking right before sealing the deal with him. I know he has some of the parts already on hand, just not sure what remains to be sourced.
He's a good dude, not the "stick it to you" kind of in-law, so I'm not worried about that.
After I look it over and take some pics next week I should have answers to those questions.
Any other suggested questions I should be asking?
I've lusted after a Mach 1 since my high school girflriend's older brother used to cruise around my home town in one back in the 70's. Now I'm all grown up, and I'm finally going to get one!
Looks pretty solid from the picture. The thing I find strange is. Are all 71-72 Mach1's missing the grille, front bumper and lower valance???????? Why is that the first thing removed? Then it appears as if they never touched the car again??? I have looked at Mach1's on Ebay, Craigslist, Hemmings, local papers, etc. and if it's not restored. There's a good chance it won't have the front end! Whats up with that!!! Just an observation. Hope he has those parts, there kinda hard to find and pretty expensive when you do. Good Luck JTS 71 Mach1
