During this beautiful weather here in Illinois, I've been driving my 72 Mach 1 ,& really enjoying it! As some of you know, my daily driver is a 1969 Cougar. I apologize in advance, but my question regards my Cougar. I'm preparing to install a hood scoop (ALA Eliminator). I can't decide on the best method to cut the hood. I've got all the usual shop tools, cut-off wheel, jig saw, drill bits (up to 3/8"), torch, air compressor etc. What would you recommend as the best method while causing the least hood distortion?
Thanks for any input,

I have not personally done what you are wanting to do - so please take my response in that light.

I have seen Chip Foose do it with a air cut off wheel. I personally have never had that much success with air cut off tools but I think that my biggest problem is lack of air capacity.

I believe that I would use my Bosch jig saw with a very fine tooth. First tape the hood for both protection and pattern material and then drill the corners with the appropriate drill size (to fit the blade and give the right curve diameter). I would also mark the approximate position of under hood bracing so that I knew that I was beginning to cut multiple layers.

Again, just a suggestion as I have not cut a hole in a good hood before.

I have never cut an opening in a hood before to accommodate a scoop but if I did I would most likely use a cut-off wheel to prevent/minimize the sheet metal from warping and it provides good control over the cut. Anytime you cut, grind, or weld sheet metal it generates heat which may cause panel warping.

I would also recommend using masking tape to create a template of the area to be cut. I always use masking tape as a guide when cutting sheet metal because it keeps from deviating off course.

Maybe some else has another recommendation.

someone several months ago was having to install rearmarker lights on their 69- 70 with new paint, you might look back and find out what they did.As I recall they had gotten it right.
I used a high speed air saw with a very fine tooth blade on mine and like the others said ..tape it... cut it slightly smaller ,better to cut too little than to mutch.

Here is a link to a hood scoop install. It appears the tool of choice is a fine tooth jigsaw as the guys have said. Makes sense after watching the video.

Nice video, it takes a lot of balls to go cutting on a good hood. I worked in a big truck shop for a lot of years and had to install all kinds of accesories. Mirrors, wind & rock deflectors, flying women, etc. after the first couple times drilling and cutting on brand new hoods it became easy. Then I decided to add the factory style GT scoop on my new 2008 Mustang, and the old jitters came back. It took 2 weeks to work up enough courage to drill all the holes in that brand new hood. All went well and it looks great. The one thing I can give as advice is measure twice! then cut once!!! If you use a cut off wheel, as Steven was talking about. (I would) Be sure to have adequate air supply as that is the key to a cut off wheel otherwise it will cut slow and stick alot. JTS 71 Mach1

I used a fine-tooth jigsaw to cut the hole for the shaker on my 06:

Agree+1 on all the previous advice. Measure, measure again, and lots of tape.

Man O man, that's a pair of truly beautiful Mustangs!! I've got some serious envying going on. Bye the way is the color of your 70 Mach 1 Grabber blue or Competition blue, or are they the same? Did you rent a helicopter to get the overhead pic? Lol
Jealously,

Thanks Keith, the color is '70 code 6 Medium Blue Metallic according to the Ford reference. PPG calls it Acapulco Blue. Pic taken from a balcony over the garage.
