LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT! You're build up was quite a bit more intense then mine was, but in 79" 500hp was pretty radical for the time. I always wanted to start with a 400 instead of 351 I figured that would have been an easy stroker. More cubes more Horses! I do have one question though, you mentioned filling the block halfway with I believe "hardblok" were you able to run it on the street or was this a race only engine? Great build up. JTS 71 Mach1

Great write-up. Thanks.

Sounds like the dream team of Cleveland builds.

JTS 71 Mach 1 ,
Yes I have had zero problems with any heating issues even on a 100 degree day in Wyoming. I think my cooling system mods/upgrades helped a lot with that problem though. As far as that goes, this is a list of what I did. 1st I swapped out the stock radiator for a good aluminum 4 row/core one, then I had built a aluminum shroud that fits it very well and used a Lincoln mark 8 electric fan (FYI-the best electric fan out there as it moves between 3800-4000 CFM according to the manufacturer-Taurus 3.8 litre fans are a close second) and you can find them in most any decent wrecking yard for a fair price. I gave 45.00 for the ones I bought and use them all the time. Next I used a Robert shaw 170* thermostat they flow and work the best in my opinion and lastly I used a flow cooler high flow/high volume water pump. Part of the build was also cleaning the water passages in the block and heads with wire brushes hand scrubbing ect. it is a tedious chore but I have had good luck removing as much rust and scale as you can. On the hottest of days I never see much more than 185-190* max on the mechanical temp guage. When the temp comes up and the fan comes on the temp comes right down. I think with all the upgrades it has made a huge difference. The trouble with the engine driven fans is that when the engine needs the most cooling IE: during town/stop and go driving, typically low RPM's the engine driven fans move the least amount of air through the radiator and that is when the engine needs the most airflow to exchange the heat. Normally running down the road on the highway or even 35-45 MPH there is sufficient air flow through the radiator to cool. I know though also I did have a cooling problem with a stock 429 Mach 1 I had in high school and after pulling my hair out finding no problems with thermostat, waterpump, head gasket leak, slipping belts or any of the normal things, it turned out to be the fins on the radiator. They were plugged up with dirt & debris and many were pushed over. So after a good combing with a radiator comb and then a good cleaning to get rid of the junk the problem was solved and never bothered me again. Hope that helps. Thanks for the interest.

And yes I do drive it on the street and race it occasionally as well. I have not raced it yet with the new engine as I have been doing the body and paint work, but I hope to get a time on it if time allows this summer.

You are also right. 500 horsepower in 79 was HUGE !!! They luckily for us Cleveland fanatics and other engines to, have come along way with stroker kits. Also for the clevelands there has always been a fairly good selection of camshafts & intakes but other heads and the newer camshaft profiles are a huge gain on the performance side. We also can thank Bob Glidden and those early Pro stock racers that lead the way in head modifying that some of the newest & most current aluminum heads today, use some of those ideas and principles albeit more improved then the early crude designs. The new machining with respect to valve jobs and how it effects flow and swirl and combustion and the modern honing techniques have come along way also, just look at any of the engines in the engine masters challenge to see that. The sky is the limit only to be limited by ones imagination and of course pocket book depth. Just my opinion though for what it's worth.
