Heater core replacement
#1
Well , I have been away from the site for the winter and it's time to get working on the car once again.
Some what of a delay this year , there is still 3 ft of snow up here and it's not going anywhere yet. The way it's piled up we'll have snow on the ground untill mid june or later !
But to the point of this trhead.

have a bad heater core and what it takes to replace them in a 69 mach is crazy. Both upper and lower dash come out and diconnect everything.
I took a bunch of pic's and tagged screws , nuts and bolts in bags.

I am now in the process of detailing everything I can thats normal not accessable , the vac motors , heater box , ac box , A/C vent cannisters , balls , felts etc.
New vacume hoses going in , detaling the heater / ac control switch assy. Not sure how to find parts for it.
New blower motor , mine was squeiling a bit .
Some one aparently had the heater core problem and when they put it back togeather , they duck taped cracks , and holes in the htr / ac box/s . used several mismatched bolts and nots.
So I have a lot of little things to take care of before it goes back togeather. But on the up side , everything will be detailed , freashly painted and repaired and hopefully never have to be done again in my life time. That is of course unless Jesus decides to wait on his return for another 40 yrs ! Which I hope not , I am ready to go.
Our car show / cruise season doesn't start untill the last wk end of may and I am hopeful I'll have the car back togeather by then.

By the way for everyone thats in this neck of the woods. We will be holding our first 2 day car event this fall Sept 20-21 2013 . Fri nite we will do a 2 1/2 hrs cruise around the back country roads , going through resort areas and towns with some of the most beautiful fall colors around the northern part of the state.
Then sat there will be a car show at the Munising Bay Shore park , right on Lake superior , from 10am to 2 pm , then awards will be handed out.
This will be the last car event for the U.P and it will hopefull be a great turn out.
If there is anyone interested let me know , I can give more details.

I just bought a heater core for my 73. It's non-A/C so I understand it's not quite as hard to do. I bypassed the heater core so I can still drive it. I'm just trying to get inspired to get into the job.

I just did the core in my 69 , wasn't to bad,not like the 86 I had to do
If I had to do it again I would go for a good coat.Just take lots of pictures, they realy help when putting things back together.

I replaced the haeter core in our 69 without removing any of the dash, probably took the glove box out. That was probably 35 years ago however and I know I couldn't do it that way now. As I remember it was not an easy job.

Well after I made the new bracket I needed , I put everything togeather and painted it .
while I was waiting for the parts to finsih this up , I detailed just about everything I could now that the dash is out.

repainted / re dyed the upper and lower dash front & back , all the nuts and bolts , the a/c vents , the freash air vent kick panels , new foil faced insulation on the fire wall , maybe clean up the dirty . dusty wiring.
I am also taking out the steering colume to repaint it. New Gas shocks on the rear .
we are having our first cruise/car show end of this month so I had better get my hinny in gear and quit finding more things to do on this car !

Most of the stuff I have done , I would not normaly have taken the time to do but nows the time with the whole dash panel out.

Well almost 30 days later and I put the the dash and related parts back in the 69 . What a job that was , what took 2 hrs to remove , took me 3 days to reinstall !
I took a ton of pic's and it's a good thing or it may never have happened.
It's not easy to remember how this stuff falls back in place. There a specific order in which it all goes back together and if it isn't done that way , guess what ? you redo it again and again. The pic's helped a lot but there are many things you have to do by memory and 30 days later one tends to forget a lot
( especially at our older age )
But all I have left as of today is the seats to install and a quick test drive and were off to the first cruise / car show of the year this coming wk end.
What do you do with all of the extra nuts and bolts left over ? Does the factory every have this problem ? :>)

You can hang on to them and next time you work on something and some bolts are missing from when the last guy worked on it you can use them Biggrin
