I've got a 72 Q code Mach1. The Marti report doesn't say anything about Ram-Air. My car does have functional Ram-Air & hood latches (hood mounted locks). An online VIN decoder (
http://mustang-links.com) lists the Q code as 351 4v RAM-AIR. Do all Q codes come with Ram-Air? I always figured the set-up on my car was done at the dealership or by a previous owner.
I look forward to any input,
Thanks,
Keith

In 1973 EPA would NOT allow the Ram-Air with the Q-code. I believe in 71 and 72 it was an option. I am not the definitive answer on that though.
If no one else chimes in contact Don Witt at Ohio Mustang Supply and he will give you a definitive answer.

A few early 72 Q codes slipped through with R/A
BUT -if it is not on the marti report - it was not born with it,

The correct online vin decoder is at (
http://mustang-links.com) I had listed it incorrectly in the original post. I have no idea who constructed this vin decoder. It appears to be flawed. That's not really a big suprise though.
Anyway thanks for any input,
Keith

I may be/ could be/ probably am wrong but in 72-73, ram air was only available on cars fitted with a 2 barrel carb.

When researching my 1972 Mach 1 I found that the dealer added quite a few modifications that the original purchaser requested after purchase. If you can track down the original owner you can sometimes find out some interesting information.

The "official" answer is probably that the car did NOT come factory-equipped with Ram-Air. Records state that Ford did not gain EPA-approval for the 4V Clevelands equipped with Ram-Air in 72-73, and therefore did not offer it.
However, as stated above, there may have been a few early 72s (built under the then-current 71 regulations) that slipped through the production process and came through with it factory-installed.
A documented factory-produced 72 4V Ram-Air car would disprove or dispel a lot of these years-long rumours...
As a side note: It must not have been too difficult to get something that was not on the "official" approved ordering form if your ordering dealership had the clout or knew the right person.
I ordered my car from Don MacMillan Ford in Houston, Tx in 1970 and I wanted everything I could get on it. I wanted the power driver's seat, but that was not on the order guide (as far as I know, anyway). It was however a Cougar option for '71.
My salesman said it was not an issue and he would make sure it was on there. I think he simply put the Cougar order code on the sheet and it came through just like that! "4-way power drivers seat" at $110 on the window sticker.
I was never told if there was any other effort they had to do to get it on there, but I don't think there was.

I wish my Q code didn't. I'd love to put R/A on it but the price for the conversion kit is a little to much for me right now but maybe in the future. Ohio Mustang has the best deal going that I've seen. Only a few early Q codes got R/A after that you could only get it with a 2 barrel carb.

Apparently, ram-air was available on any 351 or larger V8 in 71. Standard on BOSS 351 and 429 J code, optional on the rest.
Ford lost the certification on the 351 4-v for ram-air for the 72 model year, and that took effect for cars produced on or after 1-1-1972.
there are a few documented 72' 351-4V cars with factory-installed ram-air, and they all were built prior to 1-1-72.
Some have said that NO 2V cars came factory-equipped with ram-air until AFTER 1-1-72, when ONLY 2V cars could then have it as a factory option. Not sure if this is accurate, but it is interesting to consider.
