Back Burner Project 67 Ranchero
#1
My daughter (and I) have owned this 1967 Ranchero for a couple of years but it has been put on the back burner. We were going to rebuild it for her but ended up working on her 1988 Ranger http://mach1club.com/showthread.php?tid=4590
in that she was headed to college in North Dakota and I felt that something with fuel injection and 4X4 would be more appropriate.

Well over the CHRISTmas break we decided to pull it off the back burner and start some work on it. With both my daughter and son here we began floor board replacement. The Ranchero is an original Arizona vehicle and the cowl is good but it must have had a leaky windshield for most of it's life. The pans come in three pieces per side and I will have to make one for the driver's compartment back under the bed so seven pieces in all. So - we are one seventh into the project.

I bought the passenger pieces from Classic2Current and although the metal thickness is good, the quality of the stamp is terrible. More cut and bend than stamp so there is a lot of filling in to be done. They now offer a higher quality at about double the price which I plan to try for the driver's side.

The rest of the car is absolutely rust free. My daughter wants to keep the little six which runs well but change the 3 speed standard to a T-5 5 speed. I plan to pull the motor to clean it up and put new gaskets on it and then repaint it and the engine compartment before putting it back in.

It's still a back burner project but now that it is started I hope to stay with it to complete the floor replacement.

Steve,

It looks like the ice is now officially broken on the Ranchero project. Let us know your experience with the higher quality floor piece and if the extra price tag was worth the time you saved in labor.

Well, I was hoping to get another piece fitted today but it is raining and wet and as you can see I work in the great outdoors.

Plenty of other things to do before the day (year) ends.

Hey Steven, nice old Ranchero. I had a 67 Ranchero a long time ago. Mine was ratted out and driven like the dukes of hazard, there wasn't a straight spot on the bottom of it. But it drove good, and I had put a 71 400 out of an LTD, in it. That was the first year of the 400 and it had 10 to 1 compression stock. I put a huge 2 barrell form a 429 Marquis on it, and did that wake it up. It was alot of fun. By the way how goes the college girl and the Ranger? Just curious hadn't heard you say much about them lately. Have fun and Happy New Year. JTS 71 Mach1

Both college and the Ranger go well.

Her college does tri-mesters and she is currently sitting one out but is anxious to get back at the end of February.

The Ranger is on loan to a good friend (we don't have extra room here) in the meantime. It gave him a hic-up with some "gerry rigging" on some wiring that I had not caught. I fixed it while I was there for Thanksgiving.

Quite a bit of time has lapsed but I was able to get back onto the Ranchero two days last week and again today.

The first day went okay and the second day was one of those days where everything was a fight. Today was just the opposite - everything went super smooth.

My biggest problem has been the lack of quality of the reproduction floor pans. I made floor pans for my son's 63 F-100 a few years back and starting from scratch was easier than using these. Anyway the last part of the passenger floor is ready to be welded in the next available day.

I purchased these from Classic2current. They now produce a more expensive option which I will try for the driver's side. I had more time in remaking these than cutting out the old and welding in the new.

BUT it is all looking great.

Sounds like a cool project, especially with your son and daughter working together with you.
