I'm sure someone has done this before, but I thought it up myself today, so I'll pass it along. I was having trouble finding out about the engine that was in my car...it is not numbers matching...I knew the 429/460 partial block vin is located on the drivers side under the heads in a flat spot in the block. If the block is on the car it is impossible to see. I used a strip of silly putty, plumbers putty works too, and transferred the number to the putty and then transcribed the numbers from the backward impression that was on the putty. I did not have to take out the engine to read the number. Hope this helps someone else out.
