Ford first used Mach 1 in it's 1959 display of a concept "Levacar" called the Ford Rotunda.

Your correct Bob. According to the article I read, the vehicle was called the levacar, there was no reference to it as a Mach1 in the text, but in the picture of the levacar you could clearly see the Mach1 badge on the side of it. JTS 71 Mach1

The Actual term "Mach" goes back to Ernst Mach a scientist born in Austria in 1938. Ernst Mach published the first photos of the super sonic waves, that a bullet creates, when traveling faster then the speed of sound. Which is what creates the crack sound we hear. A bull whip cracks, when whipped because the tip is actually traveling faster then 750 mph thus breaking the sound barrier! "Mach1" 1 times the speed of sound. COOL!!! JTS 71 Mach1
