Ignition Switch

I've searched all over the forums to no avail (I'm new). At any rate, the other day my '73 H-Code Mach 1 kept running when I removed the key. So the intent is to replace the ignition switch. autozone part here

Question is, can I do this with the steering column still in the car or do I need to pull it? Factory service manuals are on order, but wanted the car running this week.

Your right in you diagnosis. In all probability the ignition switch is your culprit. A good clean and re-grease may also return proper function but a quality new switch is your best recourse.

Pulling the switch is a relatively easy task and can be accomplished with everything in-tack in the car. Remember to disconnect the battery when working with electrical.

I don't recall seeing a "how to" thread for what you need but it is straightforward. A normal Ford operation if you have done it on any Ford of the same years.

The hard, part Steve didn't mention is wallering around on your back in the floor board to do it. If your near the age Steven and I are it gets tougher every time! But otherwise it's very easy. JTS 71 Mach1

Right on, thanks for the quick replies. I don't mind crawling under there for something simple. But if I'm looking at this correctly, I may not have to.

So just drop the two bolts from column bracket and the column pivots down then?

Yeah thats one way. It will take a little doing to get all the blocks, spacers etc. back in place after you change out the switch. Hope you took pictures to make sure it all goes back, like it came out. JTS 71 Mach1

Yeah - that part too!

I find it easier anymore to unbolt the seat (four bolts) and give myself some space. My son and I did his 71 Maverick with the seat in but then I had his flexibility.

I replaced mine many, many, years ago when I was much younger and I agree, the hard part is positioning your body on the floor board. It might be easier to remove the four bolts holding the drivers seat in and give yourself plenty of elbow room.
