How I fell in love with the Mustang

Hi all,

I'm in the Army and there are only two things I love. My Apache and my Mach 1 Mustang.
Here is my story.
I was 4 or 5 years old in the 1970's (yes i am showing my age) and I was on my Green Machine big wheel and going around the block as fast as I could in Boston Mass. One sunny Saturday I noticed two car guys working on their Mustangs. I rolled up to them and asked whats broke, as both hood were up on their two mustangs. They both turned to me and laughed and said there wasn't anything wrong, that they were making them faster. I got off my green machine and asked how are you doing that? With anything it all starts with a question and if you have a good teacher your hooked. A week or so went by and these guys were out there again working on their mustangs. Only this time I noticed that one of the mustangs had external exhaust pipes on the side of the car instead the stock look. I commented on how great it looked and with that the guy quickly jumped in his car and started it up. It shook my Green Machine big wheel with its loud noise and vibration. After he shut it down I told them, I love the sound. For the next two years while we lived in the neighborhood I always would stop by when they were working on there cars and learned to stay out of the way but learned allot. Many years later I learned what model they were working on. It was a 1969 Mustang and a 1970 Mustang. Thats all it took, I was a mustang fan! Which is funny cause my dad was a T-bird fan. I now own a 2004 Ford Mustang Mach 1. I wish I could afford the 1969 Mach 1. I am currently looking for a good restro project, but they are getting harder and harder to find. Thanks for reading.

Great story! It sounds like I'm a bit older than you, but remember those days. It was safer back then for a kid to drive his trike or big wheel around the block and talk to strangers!

Welcome Dave,

Great story.

Well the good part of it all is that you have the 2004 Mach 1. Surely that can't be all that wrong. 3gears

The first Mustang I fell in love with, was my neighbors 65 hardtop with a radical 289, and 4 speed. I was only 7 or 8 at the time and one day my neighbors little brother told me to go ahead and sit in the driver's seat. It might as well have been the space shuttle with the array of gauges. By the way thankyou for your service to our country it's people like you that allow people like me the freedoms I enjoy!!

I remember those days too. I was a little bit older and hanging around with car guys who were driving a sunbeam tiger and a 1968 Shelby GT 500 KR convertible. The both worked at a Sunoco station back in the day when you paid 40cents a gallon and got green stamps, your oil checked and air in your tires and your Windows washed. Those were the days.

The first car loan I ever had was for a 1969 Mustang Mach 1 for $2000 from there I spent a ton of money on. Over $1,000 for chrome in the engine compartment. and $600 just to paint the underside of the hood. You could step back 6 feel and read the letters on the accell sparkplug wires from the reflection under the hood

I blew the engine up in that car and made the mistake of getting rid of it.

Had a few since, and the latest approaching a 100k car, So much for common sense huh?
