Hi all I’m Steve. I’m new to this site. I am currently restomodding a 71 mach1 Any info, advice or discussion about these cars would be greatly appreciated. I sometimes think I’m the only person in the world that loves these mustangs. Every time I meet another mustang fan, I always hear the same thing……Why didn’t you do a 69, 68, 67? Don’t get me wrong I love them and all, it’s just the 71 is my favorite.
Here are a few pics of my car. I have been working on it for years now. It should be done by now but the economy sucks.

After blasting I found holes where it was an original vinyl top car








Tremec TKO 600 Lakewood Belhousing

13 1/2" slotted rotors on all four corners. QA1 adjustable shocks and Comp Engineering slide-a-link traction bars. (By using these each has 2 mounts so you can retain your staggard shocks.)

Currie crate rearend narrowed 2" on both sides

460 stroked to 521. All roller 429 cobra jet heads.




17x8 Vintage Wheel works, all grab a track front suspension 1" drop. Wheels have been powdered coated a dark gray in the middle.

17x9 1/2 Custom offset with a 315-35-17 when the vehicle sits on the ground the wheel tucks nicely in the wheel well. I am also running grab a track 1" drop leaf springs in the back.

Hard to argue with Bob's car, and I have owned a 1969 but ... I am a convert of the 71-73 body style.

I love the work that you have done on your car. Would you elaborate for me on what clutch set up you are using. What offset are you running on your rear rims to run 315's?

Hi, thank you both! First I must admit the 69 is not mine it used to belong to my friend Steve Minnick. I was just fixing some of the wiring before he sold it. I couldn’t resist taking the picture while I had it there. I got the superior clutch and all the swap parts for the 5spd at moderndriveline.com. It is a cable style clutch system like the 90s 5.0 cars have. As far as the rear end goes I can’t remember the exact offset of the top of my head. It is a 17-9 ½ vintage wheel works with an extra 2” offset taken out but what I did was get the wheels and tires I wanted set under the car then measured for the rear called Currie and they made that length rear end. They took 2” out of each end and the perches are all stock location and no cutting was needed in the wheel well.
The 70 and down rear end is 1 5/8” shorter on each side I believe? So if you swapped rear ends you might be able to pull it off depending how you balanced the offset?

Did the kit come with a new pedal or a cam adapter to weld to your current pedal. (How is the cable attached to your clutch pedal?) Have you fit the cable in place and does it clear your headers neatly?

The cable bolts to your stock clutch pedal then goes straight down to the floor missing the headers totally then comes in from the back of the trans and bolts to the bell housing. This makes a pulling motion instead of pushing. This keeps the firewall clean and no header problems.


it didnt come with a pedal, I had to find one. they sell a retro fit one now but im not a big fan. I prefer to have a real pedal

I used an early Mustang system for my son's 71 Maverick and it works fine but the 71/73 Mustang reverses the action. (That is why the cable runs to the floor) Undoubtedly a much cleaner and cable friendly route!

Do you happen to have any clutch pedal, floor, bell housing and cable pictures?

On another line: what was your preparation process for primer after soda blasting? And, what is the name of your color choice?
