What Am I Looking AT?
#1
So I had the opportunity this past Monday and Tuesday to spend a little quality time with my Mustangs! I dropped the FMX transmission on the Grande to bring it back to Mexico with me to clean it up, paint it and put in new seals to take back and put in the Mach 1. I also pulled the heads on my Mach 1 to see what I inherited with my purchase. I found that everything is new! That's good - but what do I have?

Can anyone tell me from looking at the picture with the piston what it looks like I have. In know the .30 over bore but what about compression or any tell tale manufacturing marks on the pistons?

The lifters are Johnson HT 900 which according to what I have read on the Cleveland forum and the Pantera forum are the best that I could have hoped for in a hydraulic flat lifter. That's encouraging!

How about camshaft. I have not taken the timing gear cover or timing gear out yet but that would be my next step. Are there any marks on the front of the camshaft to tell me what I have or do I have to remove the camshaft to read markings on the back?

I figure that I might as well know what I have before putting it all back together. The next step will be to buy a four barrel intake manifold for it and a 4 barrel carb.

I'm not up to date on identifying your pistons, but good news that it's all new in there!

You are sooo close, go on and pull the thing out and open up the bottom end. clean and paint..and stick it all back in one piece.

Don you are right. My problem - location.

The car is on a trailer in a RV storage yard in Arizona. I live in Mexico and get a chance to work on my car for a day once every two months or so. Coming up with a workable hoist would be the main issue.

But ... you are so right.

Hey Steve, I did some searchin and found that the pistons are Sealed Power L2379F - Speed-Pro Powerforged Pistons for a 351c can't tell you any more then that, hope this helps some.

Thanks Robert.

If such be the case then they are flat top pistons http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SLP-L2379F30/ and with my 73 2V heads I should come in around 9.5:1 compression. That's what I wanted to know. Now to figure out what I am running for a camshaft.

Any other insight?

hey steven, the cam choice is up to your preferences. say if you want decent fuel mileage and plenty of vacuum for your power brakes, i've used the comp cams 268h which is larger than an rv cam but not so aggressive that you need adjustable rockers which weren't factory for 2v heads, that cam works real well with 9:1 compression and a tall rearend gear ratio like 3.00-3.50 to 1 like alot of these cars seem to have. hope this helps you somewhat. -Travis-

Thanks Travis,

I am hoping to find out what cam I currently have as it is new with this rebuild. I just do not have any information of the rebuild as I bought the car from a third party. Of course if the new cam that is in the motor is not to my liking (whatever that may be) I will consider a new grind at this time. I would like to up the factory 1973 power output to at least 1970 levels. We'll see.

Hey Steven I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but those are not flat tops. They are unadoribly known as swimming pools! So claimed by the lowered section in the middle, there by reducing the compression ratio to about 8.5 to 1. Ford did this to keep from changing the heads to larger combustion chambers. They simply dished the pistons. Cheaper to make new pistons, then heads. JTS 71 Mach1

JTS - you are right. (I knew that - or should have) Thank you for the help. Any take on their make?

So 8.5 to 1.

Basically I just want to know what I have before I put it all back together. I may change the cam and hope to add an after-market intake and carb. I have a 1970 4V in storage for a build up at some latter point.

So .. to know what I have for my cam, do I need to pull it or is there some other way of learning it's secrets?
