Engine stall
#11
Hi again everyone,
I am about at my wits end. I cant figure this issue out. i replaced the alternator, battery and VR (4 times), had the alt tested (it passed), and i still cannot get the system to charge. My battery with the car off is 12.8. i followed the directions posted here, I jumped the VR plug hole 1 to 3 and my multimeter reads at 14.6 at the battery terminals. If i put the VR back in place my multimeter reads 12.3+/- at the battery terminals on all 4 of the VRs. I checked the wires for continuity by putting the red wire from my multimeter into the VR plug hole and touching the associated point on the alternator, (BAT, FLD) with the black wire from multimeter and they seem fine (i get a loud tone, no real "breaking up").

Here is how the VR is wired at the plug:

Yellow - A
Green/Red - S
Orange - F

Not Used - I

The yellow and Orange go to the alternator. I am not sure where the Green/Red goes but it looks like it is going out to the headlight area.

Also with the car off, i removed the ground at the engine block and cleaned that up and the ground at the VR, i removed the connections to the starter solenoid and cleaned all of them (didn't think it could hurt), as well as all the connections to the VR and alternator.

Is there anything else i can check? If the wiring was bad wouldn't the jumping of VR plug hole 1 to 3 fail? I must be missing something. This is making me NUTS. I really appreciate the help.

Thanks guys
Gos

Is it a new or old battery? If it is old have you tried a different battery?

New battery Oz. About 2 weeks old, no more than 3 weeks max. Remaned Alternator that tested good, and new VRs.

Could the wires be crossed or something like that?

Thanks

Has anything else been done to the electrical system since this problem arose? Anything regarding the dash, headlights, alternator etc...?

I don't know if the Fords are different? but the old VW's had to have the dash light for the generator in the circuit for it to charge. If the bulb was blown it wouldn't charge. Is your alternator charge bulb working? I haven't looked at the wiring diagram yet to see if it is needed.

Oz, it is very good possibility that the gauge is not connected. There was no motor, tranny or wiring at all in the engine compartment when i bought the car. I probably should have mentioned that earlier Duh

I bought a motor and tranny out of a 1968 Cougar (302 C4 tranny), had the motor rebuilt then had a mechanic put that, the tranny and wiring in. The wiring i got from a Mustang graveyard. It never crossed my mind to check, or ask about, the charging system before i took it from the mechanic and brought it home. it very well may have been faulty then too for all i know.

Mach1 the only thing that changed since i started working on it again was what i mentioned before, new battery, remaned Alt, and new VR. But again, i am not sure if the charging system ever worked.

Yeah OZ is right. I had forgot about the older wiring with the idiot light, or an amp guage. If they fail (guage or bulb) it won't charge. It's amazing how much you can forget. When you don't work on the old stuff much anymore. SCo_hmmthink JTS 71 Mach1

Hi all,
I was unable to work on the car for a while, but I got back to it and have been ripping the wiring apart in the engine compartment for the last week or so. Anyway, I have another newbie question. I have 2 headlight wiring harnesses. One in the car, and one that was in a parts box that came with the car. The one in the car has wiring for the voltage regulator but no wiring for the sport lamps. The wiring from the parts box (which i am pretty sure is the original one for the car) has the wiring for the sport lamps but i dont see wiring for the Voltage Regulator. So my question is which is the correct harness and if the wiring harness with the sport lamps is the one for my car where do i find the wiring for the Voltage regulator? Looks like the previous owner also was wire cutter happy. I had to splice a bunch of stuff back together.

Thanks

Hi all,
Quick update. SUCCESS!!!! 23_30_106

I should have posted this a few months ago. It turned out to be a wiring issue in that the headlight wiring harness in the car was completely incorrect for my car. Anyway, long story short, There is a small VR/ALT wiring harness that plugs into the main wiring harness that originates at the firewall and runs down the pass. side of the car, it was missing. I tracked one down, put it in, replaced the incorrect headlight wiring harness with the one i had in a box and now i have a charging system that works plus all the lights work now too, sport lamps, blinkers, hazzards, headlights, dash lights, everything.

Thanks everyone for helping, I appreciate it.
