Engine mounts

Steve O,

I asked Pete this question for you on this thread: http://mach1club.com/showthread.php?tid=3272 You'll find more to his explanation there and a phone number to contact there on your side of the water. Hopefully some of this helps.

I have changed engine mounts in other cars and it's pretty straightforward but I thought I would just ask.

I can hear a bit of a knocking noise when idling (not internal engine knocking noise Laughing) and the car is shaking around a bit. Had a look at the passenger side mount and it looks a bit past its used by date......a few cracks that I can see in it. Can't see the drivers side as easily but I imagine it is similar. Will grab some new mounts and have a go.

When you loosen the mount can you raise the engine under the sump with a block of wood to support it?

Send me your tips Idea

Steve i should have read this first. mine was doing exactly the same thing and a lot of shudder when taking of from a stop. New mounts fixed the problem but i could not get 73 mounts even though thats what the catalogue said that's what they were. Reality was they were 72 mounts

Hope this helps Pete
Steve here are pictures of my engine mounts and as you can see the height difference between 72 and 73 models. Mine also cracked

Thanks everybody, info coming from both sides of the pond. Hi Pete (are you a sparky?)

I was resolved to taking these new mounts back and getting the ones for the 71/72 but if they are not the right height I may just keep these ones and modify them. I think I have read some where that there might be two different heights for the earlier mounts. Not sure what year model that was so I will do some more surfing on the net. A friend bought some on the weekend for his 72 so I will get him to measure them for me. I am hoping that I will just have to elongate the hole on the rear bolt hole where it mounts on the motor and hopefully it will fit if I keep these ones.

I will definately be keeping the old mounts and if I ever need new ones in the future will get new rubber put on them.

I saw the Scotch self amalgamating tape in one of your photos and thought you might have been a sparky Laughing

Okay guys help me out. What is a sparky? I can venture a guess but would rather be right.

Thanks Pete for your immediate help with the motor mounts. What all did you have done internally to your 351C?

Welders Rofl ........sorry couldn't resist............usually they do a trade as a boiler maker but there may be other trades now like fitting and turning? I think it is mostly boiler makers that are the welders though. You guys get to learn Aussie and we get to learn Yank Huh

So is Aussie similar to the Brits, like the hood is a bonnet, the roof a hood, the trunk is a boot, and the fender is a wing? I also like the way a can is called a tin. Many years ago I use to work at a British car dealership here in the US, and they had employed a lot of English mechanics, so I had to learn their lingo!
