In tearing down the engine compartmant I found this contraption. I am assuming it is for the fuel system. The hose goes to the fuel line that attaches onto the top of the tank. I am assuming it is missing some other tube. I will probably feel stupid but what the heck is it?

It collects the fuel vapor from the tank and stores them until you start the engine.the other hose is a 1 inch paper/foil tube that connects to the side of the air cleaner next to the PCV ..from the valve cover.

You Guy's are right it is part of the emission system. It's actually a charcoal canister, to kill the smell of the evaporating gases from the tank, and the description of how it works is correct. But as for the 1" paper hose I haven't got a clue??? JTS 71 Mach1
