H pipes on mine aswell, but like everyone else having not owned it from showroom I can't say it wasn't changed. I thought x pipes were something that came along aftermarket from tuner types that liked the sound better.

Heck back in the early seventies they didn't even know what an X pipe was. They were all H pipes and it was supposed to balance the pulses and help low end torque. As I remember X pipes started showing up in the 80"s to the 90"s, about the same time as "Slo Masters" oops, I mean Flo Masters. I could be wrong about when they actually arrived. But it sure wasn't the 71-73 years. JTS 71 Mach1

Per 1971 Ford shop Manual Volume Two / Engine Exhaust System Sec. 26-22-07.
All Mustang and Cougar Dual Exhaust Systems 302,351 and 429CJ engines have H-Pipe exhaust system. There is a chart that shows dimension variations in clearance for Transmission cross members for auto and manual trans for 302,351 and 429 exhaust systems. Also has reference clearance dims for parking brake cable and transmission extension.
Hope this helps you.

302 & 351-2V cars came with single exhaust, no H-pipe on a single system.
