1972 original paint questions
#1
Hello someone or several please help me. I have a 1972 mach 1 that I am doing the body work getting ready for paint. My question revolves around the trim paint -( hood , front & rear valance panels, rear wing, lower body side accents , front spoiler ) Seems to me " IF " I remember correctly these if they were in black were all painted in a matte finish from the factory originally and " NOT " in a gloss finish like the rest of the paint. Can anyone tell me if that is correct. . .I must be getting old as I cant seem to find out any other place or remember myself.
Thanks

I believe you are looking for HotRod Black.

Yeah You're exactly right they were a matte finish. even when in silver. My 71 was silver on the lower approx, 12 inches from the front to the back and it was actually paint with a matte finish. The rest of the stripes were silver vinyl with a matte finish. I know for sure if your car was black on the lower, 12 inches it was painted with a matte finish as well. It wasn't exactly hot rod black, as that was a flat paint and weathered badly. The matte finish is more of a semi gloss. Any reputible paint store should have all the correct codes, mixing charts, and can duplicate all of it with out any trouble.

Hey JTS 71 MACH 1 , Thanks for the reply and info. I thought that was correct. I just cant find the paint code for the black in any of my books. I found the paint code for PPG paint for the center of the hood so I will double check with them if it is the same paint used for the lower part of the car. I am sure it is though.
Thanks

Some good restoration information is on the 429 mustang megasite including several options for the semi gloss black. Be aware much of the information is specific to 1971 429 equipped cars. The rear spoiler is supposed to have a "textured" surface. I adjusted the fluid and pattern screws and air pressure until I got the "texture" desired.

C9zx Thanks for the heads up. I will check out that website. I thought that was the case but was having a hard time locating any info on it. Thanks again!

I forgot to tell you, the black paint at the door opening is different on 1972 from 1971. I can provide pictures if you need them.

c9zx Chuck that would be awesome if you dont mind sending me pics , that would help me out alot and be greatly appreciated. No hurry take your time, as I'm still doing body work and getting her ready for paint. If you dont mind could you send them to my personal e-mail ? I am still learning how to navigate this site and some times I cant seem to get were I want. If only I knew as much about computers as I do about engines it would help.
Thanks

From my recent experience on my 73 Convertible with the black Decor option the body shop had trouble using the PPG paint code for the black. The first paint on one of the valence's (Painted off the car) was way too glossy. The next try was way too flat with a rough surface. They ended up having the PPG paint representative come out and help them with the mix. Here are a couple of pics thay may help you out (the 73 may be different).

This pic shows the first take at the PPG black Decor option paint, the bottom panel is the original and the top is too glossy:

Final results looks good:

Here are the 73 PPG Paint Codes for comparison to your 72:

Rare Pony you are right. The one looks too glossy and the other to dull & rough. The finished product though looks GREAT !! I have talked with the PPG rep in my area and he told me that the black has a flattening agent in it and that is the mix that is really hard to get correct. He suggested mixing a very small amout and keeping a log of the flattener % put in and do a couple trial sprays on a piece of sheetmetal. My car now is the same as your shiny one and it just doesnt look right. Loooks phony & plastic like. So I think thats the route I will go is to do a trial and error on a spare piece I have.
Thanks
