New Member 71 Mach 1

Just bought 71 Mach 1. It has a 73 grille in it, but I just bought the correct grille for it off ebay. It has chrome surrounds around the headlights, not sure if it should? The hood front edge(has thin chrome edge) doesn't match the headlight surrounds? Did they come with chrome in these areas?

My 72 Mach came with the black headlight surrounds and did not have the chrome in the areas you mention.

Are the first 5 numbers in your vin# does it include a 5 (five) ?

Seems like this is unusual if it does, but I'm not a 100% authority, someone else here might be able to help with more knowledge than I.

Yes it does. I have run the numbers and it is a true Mach 1. Back then there were so may different ways you could order a car that its hard to be able to know what is and isn't fact. My car came from the factory with a 302 and on a couple of other mustang websites they claim the Mach 1 only had a 351C or 429 which I know is not true. For example, very few people are aware that back in the day you could special order a Post GTO car. Thanks for answering. Jim O

Welcome, your correct the headlight surounds are not chrome on the mach 1 grille. They could come with the chrome fender extensions and the chrome on the leading edge of the hood, as well as the chrome front bumper. But not on the grille. Glad to here someone else doesn't like the 73 grille.

I have a 72 with the 73 grille. Let me know how successful you are at swapping them out. I have heard from a few people that they are not interchangeable.

Mach1 not comes only with 351 & 429 engines, Mach1 it was an estetic and chassis-performance option. Mach1 comes with front bumper and rim, color matching to the car. You can control if is a real Mach1, 2 things:
1) The rear suspension: crossed on the rear axle
2) Full Iron structure under the rear seats
