I can’t say that this is much of a surprise really. I mean Ford just released its new 2011 Explorer, the SUV that the Ford Sport Trac is based on and nowhere did I see mention of a redesign to the 2010 Sport Trac. Like so many other hybrid-ish SUV’s the Sport Trac started out as a great concept when it was released back in 2001. Being half SUV and half pick-up truck it was marketed to those who partook in the outdoor lifestyle and needed the versatility of a rear bed to accomplish their weekend warrior chores. It was also good looking and provided owners with a great option over buying a full size pick-up truck.

Over time however markets and buying habits change as do the needs of the automotive consumer and while SUV’s aren’t out of style, the concept of the “one does all” machine is beginning to fade. Consumers will now have to pony up the cash for a full size Ford F150 if they are planning on hauling supplies back from the Home Depot, as the Sport Trac will no longer be with us. There is however good news for those of you who have always wanted one of these things. First off Explorer Sport Trac’s have a terrible residual value so picking up a low mileage one on the cheap shouldn’t be that difficult. Secondly, Autotrader.com has no less than 3,054 used listings so you’ll have loads of choices. It’s all about looking on the bright side people… it’s all about the bright side.
