Thanks man, im not too big on making it look like something its not. Doesn't feel right. And like you said, its just the appearance. The way i look at it, since its not a Mach 1, im not constrained to the original paint/trim pattern. Thanks for the welcome.

It still amazes me how revered the term 'Mach 1' is - at the end of the day, it's not much more than a trim package with its own VIN body code.

Still a good lookin' car with lots of 'smiles per gallon' potential.

Yea, its crazy how the Mach 1 is so revered. And its true, majority of people see the body of 71-73 Mustang and call it Mach 1. Not too many know in depth. Looks great in my opinion, theyre all beautiful cars. And true, gotta have the gas money to truly enjoy the car.  Thumbup

Yea, the guy sold it as a Mach 1. And yes, i saw the potential in it and jumped on it fast. Other cars i had been hunting for, that were rusted and gutted out, not running were running for 2k plus. I picked this up for 3k and running, good interior and some rust.

You bought it for 3k?  Dang thats good!!  Mine was 17k needing some work, and now I'm wondering if i was ripped off LOL.

True.  If im not mistaken, doesn't the hood also give it away?  In the picture here the hood is flat.  Don't all mach 1's have the ram air scoop?

Hey for that price there is no loss for the false advertising.  Plus, how many people can say they bought a car for $3k AND drove it home too. Good for you!

I remember there was some discussion about that on another forum, and of course there never really was a definitive answer.  There are some Mach 1s out there with flat hoods, but I think you're right and they were probably special ordered that way.  Again, they're rare and don't pop-up all that often - most all of the Mach 1s I've seen have the NASA hood, whether they have Ram Air or the block-off plates for the non Ram Air cars (keep in mind that the Ram Air cars had the TuTone black-out paint and hood locks standard with the Ram Air package, but those things could also be special ordered separately as well).

For a basically rust free running and driving Fastback, you got a fairly good deal.  You can use it and fix and restore things along the way and not be saddled with a full restoration before having a running and driving car.  Build it the way you want, for me, I don't think I would go the clone route.  Sometimes clones look good, sometimes they look hacked.


It's simply the third and forth characters in the vin code, 05 that indicates it's a Mach 1 vs. 02 for a Fastback (Sportsroof).  Differences are mostly interior and exterior trim, some mild suspension improvements, i.e. springs and sway bars, and some mild performance improvements.  But, nothing like the suspension and performance improvements the Boss Mustangs came with.  Mach 1 production numbers are typically much lower than for a Fastback or Coupe.  Plus, Mach 1's typically had a harder life than Sportsroof or Coupe Mustangs so fewer survived.  All that adds up to the valuation difference and why true Mach 1's are typically more desirable, aside from the Boss Mustangs.

Yea man, thanks. I pounced on the deal. And the price at the end isn't as important as how happy you are with your car. Life is too short!

Thanks for the clarification and valuable information. And you're right, its a good starter, with the resources available today i can make it however i want to. I agree with the Mach clone, im aiming towards giving it it's own look. And there is some rust, trunk through, and some other 4 spots. Looking forward to getting into the work.

Welcome David,

As has been answered for you - No, you did not buy a Mach 1 but as has also been repeated - no big deal, no big loss.

You have the car (body style) of your dreams so run with what you have and enjoy.  Build it like you want it.

Your fastback only lack a few cosmetic touches to be what the base Mach 1 was from the factory.
