Has it really been that long since I have posted an update (or done any work on this project)! Shame on me.
Anyway I have been collecting some parts for the motor and have been able to spend a few hours for a couple afternoons last week and this week teaching my daughter some engine basics.
We have changed the 94 EFI timing cover to a manual fuel pump cover. I also now know that there are at least three variations of fuel pump eccentrics for the 302.
Anyway with the correct eccentric and double roller timing chain the cover is in place.
This evening it was about re-installing the cylinder heads.
The oil pan has been un-dented, cleaned, holes welded - sorted to reinstall AFTER we install a new rear main seal.
Well it is good father and daughter time and little by little the 302 is going back together.
Sorry, now pictures but I promise to take a few next time we are able to put our hands to it.

Hi Steven,
It has been awhile since you posted on this thread. I had to re-read it to catch myself up (LOL)! Anyway, I am glad to hear you are moving forward and it sounds like the engine is getting close to being finished. Definitely looking forward to pictures.

Yep sounds like the wheels in your life grind kind of slowly, about like mine. I made some real good progress on the headers, and I haven't been able to get back to it, in about 3 weeks + Everything seems to demand my attention. Maybe I'll be able to get back to it this weekend. Keep plugging away Steven, the finish line is in sight! I keep telling myself that. LOL!

I'm not trying to be negative, but sometimes my posts might read that way. Did you get the correct timing cover for the water pump rotation you are planning to use? I understand there are different timing covers for standard and reverse rotation water pumps. I've also heard (but haven't seen myself) that there is a timing cover that is designed for either standard or reverse rotation water pumps.
Lastly, what is this from your first post in this thread, "First there was a 1967 F-250 Highboy"?

With no pun intended, you got my wheels spinning. Pardon my ignorance, but I didn't know there were different timing covers for water pump rotations and was also not familiar with the different eccentrics for the fuel pumps either. I am confused why there would be different timing covers for the same blocks and when did they (Ford) start doing this? Plus, I would hope the auto parts store would ask what rotation pump you needed since there is a choice. Hey, you learn something new everyday.

I believe there are about 6 different timing cover arrangements for small block Ford motors, standard rotation, reverse rotation, with or without fuel pump boss, with or without dip stick tube hole It can get confusing. As far as fuel pump eccentrics, early small block Fords use a 2-piece eccentric and later models use a 1-piece eccentric. I don't know what year the change was made. I do know in 1969 the later 1-piece design is used.
I found this on another site.

Mike,
I can see there are different covers. So it looks like the reverse rotation timing cover would be a much later model since it would work with a serpentine belt engine. But they all look like they would bolt on to any 302 engine.
Thanks for the clarification and pictures.

As for the timing covers, yes, that is pretty much it in a nut shell.
So of course the earlier 302 had a standard rotation, no dipstick, no crankshaft sensor timing cover but that cover was missing. The 94 motor is reverse rotation, no dipstick, with crankshaft sensor timing cover.
I now have a "universal" standard rotation, dipstick and with crankshaft sensor boss (mount). The right unit for my application using a standard rotation water pump with the inlet and outlet and heater hose tubes in the correct 65 Mustang 289 location.
Yes, earlier fuel eccentric are one piece and latter eccentrics are two pieces (one inside the other). The rarity was that my early seventies block 302 came with a one piece eccentric that was a deeper dish which can only be used with a "quiet" chain and not the double roller. I have replaced that with a latter two piece with the corresponding split press pin that locates the timing gear and some eccentrics on the cam. (Yes, there are various lengths for those as well).
As to the "First there was a 1967 F-250 Highboy" - this is my fifth child, fifth father-child project. The first child, first project was the 67 F-250 Highboy.

That explains why I sometimes see timing chain and gear sets advertised for use with either one piece or two piece fuel pump eccentrics. I use a Cloyes True Roller double row timing gear set with the one piece fuel pump eccentric. I've also used the double row timing chain and gear set the Ford Racing sells with the one piece fuel pump eccentric.

Yes, for the most part I believe that most timing sets are able to be used with the one piece or two piece eccentrics.
There is however an exception as I have one that can only be used with the "silent" type single chain.
