Ok its winter in the northeast and like all good mustang owners i want to make some improvments to my mustang. Now if I win the power ball tonight this post will be null and void because i will have enough money to pay someone to restore my car to concours condition. No fun in that though.
So my car (1970 mach 1)has the deluxe interior with imitation wood grain and a chrome ring on the bezel around the gauges. From old age and lack of cleaning, the chrome has gone.
My question is has anyone come across a chrome paint or product that works on plastic, that I can purcase to restore that chrome outline. I have seen a new bezel online i can purchase. Again no fun in that ( and wife says no money for the mustang now). Thanks for the help. regards John. ps. pic is not my cluster
For my 1969 Mach 1 I tried a chrome paint on my instrument cluster and clock bezel for the same reason you are thinking. I wasn't happy with it. It looked like bright silver and applied very thick.
I ultimately used SEM satin black to repaint the black portion and SEM silver to paint the chrome outlines. After applying the paint colors I applied a few coats of SEM satin clear. The finished result doesn't try to mimic the chrome but looks good plus they are still the original bezels.
Take you time. The masking between applying the black and silver is time consuming. You'll need 1/8" and 1/4" wide masking tape along with some wider selections. One tip to prevent paint bleed at the masking tape edges is spay a coat or two of clear over the masking tape and the edges. Let it dry then spray the color. The clear helps seal the taped edges and if any bleeds through it won't be noticeable.

Thanks guys for the input. Mike i agree with keeping it original the value in my car is, its a true survivor. While i was waiting. I found this stuff on ebay. SPAZ STIX PREMIUM PAINTS Ultimate Mirror Chrome Aerosol Paint (3.5oz ) only about 11 bucks. Think i'll get some and try it on a plastic spoon. I will let you know how it looks. All though a nice silver with clear coat will look a lot better than worn semi white plastic and faded none no gloss chrome.
The picture i posted, is a cluster on craigslist that is close to me. But i dont need a whole cluster for 375.00 and its broken. Maybe I'll offer him the 225. (price of a new bezel) and see if he bites. Its never bad to have some extra parts either. thanks again, John

Ok I did some more research on the Spaz Stix Chrome paint. I went on some modeling clubs websites and did not get that warm fuzzy feeling that the paint would look like the chrome finishing we are looking for. So i put that in my watch folder for now.
I did however stumble over this. FORD Chrome Dash Vent Bezel Trim Edge Refinishing Paint Marker Pen Silver. It is sold on ebay buy motor city muscle car . The discription seemed to be closer to what we are looking for. For only 10.00 bucks thought i would give a try. Should have it by next weekend. I'll spread the word after i try it.

Sorry it took so long { life gets in the way some times } Not chrome at all. They sent me a tube of testers model silver paint. Very missleading. I think i'll leave some negitive feedback. But i have not given up yet. I'll keep searching.

There is a place in Loveland, Colorado that does (Spray Chroming) on plastics and all sorts of other items.
The owners live in Estes Park but moved operations to Loveland.
I had "Tach Man" do mine.
He does great work and did the tach conversion on the old innerds of my old in dash 70 Mach 1 tach. The spray Chroming is only available with a complete gauge calibration service at $500.
He also converted my speedometer to a 200mph face using original style Ford artwork. It looks like it came from Ford that way.
I will look up the name of that Spray Chrome shop and get back to you guys.
There are many custom spray chrome shops all over the USA I would bet.
