Some Backyard Wrenching with the Kiddos

My 7 year old daughter, Madison, asked me why some parts were yellow and the others all rusty. I told her that all of this was painted yellow at one time. Before I had a chance to explain the rusting process and old age of a car left to pasture she came back with, "I guess the guy who paints the floor didn't do a good job."

Love that kiddo.

Now that's funny by God! JTS 71 Mach1

I didn't physically do this to my Mach1 today but I did it in my mind. 1973 351 Cleveland 2V with a 2.25" dual exhaust. That's what I've got right now. The engine is all stock.

So I'm looking to go 2V to 4V without doing a ton of other work out of the gate.

EDL-2750 Intake
EDL-1406 Carb

Anyone else go from 2V to 4V carb and intake only? What did you use? Results? I need to replace the 2.25" exhaust that's all rusted out. Should I go up to 2.5"? I'm also wondering if I should keep the PCV system alive or go with breathers? For the record I currently don't have a functioning PCV system. I have an oil cap with a hose to no where on the drivers side (I know where its suppose to go thank to you guys) and someone tin snipped the passenger side. Air filter? Currently has the stock case. Anything else? Seems it will be wise to replace rockers, rods, and nuts too.

You should hook up a PCV system.

With stock 2 V heads and stock two piece valves, the rockers should be fine for now
Do the intake, timing chain [ or at least get a look at it ] headers, maybe re-curve the dist.
Is a cam in the budget???

I might have a used intake here - I'll check

The timing chain will definitely be in the items to be inspected. A cam is something I would surely like to add if it will give me a little more out of the engine. My thoughts for the engine are take off anything it doesn't absolutely need and work with the block and heads that I've got.

For now though it's continue to plug away at getting the body stripped. My ultimate goal this fall/winter is to have the body stripped. So come this spring I can get it off the sub-frame and get the body work finished and painted.

Then I can start collecting what I need for underneath. Suspension, exhaust, electrical, other mechanical items yet to be discovered.

Getting ready for the spring... I posted earlier that I plan to take our 351C 2V and convert it over to a 4V with the following:

EDL-2750 Intake
EDL-1406 Carb

I have alot of other things to spend my money on first before I do this. One of them being an exhaust. I have headers to two pipes to two mufflers, with nothing behind the rusted carcasses that were once mufflers. The headers look like they'll clean up with a good bead blasting and ceramic coat. However, I would like to upgrade the headers too as well as the carb and intake manifirold. I'm just not going to be able to do the in the same time I do the out. $$$

Since an exhaust is in my future this spring any suggestions that would work with my stock 2V setup and once I get the new carb and intake? Looking for header and dual exhaust suggestions.

If your plans do not include changing to a set of 4V heads then the exhaust headers you use now will work fine latter with the intake and carb swap.

There are various 2 1/4" kits that are sufficient for your setup now as well as latter. The "bragging" rights are in the 2 1/2" systems but they are not needed.

Never mind the 'Go' parts, I'm still seeing $ and rust!!

Any recommendations on which headers to get?

I used Hooker back in the day but that was thirty years ago!

I used Hooker on my son's Maverick but had a few issues.

I have heard good praise for Hedman on the 351 2V Mach 1.

I know I've been down the path earlier. I found the last piece to my PCV system while walking through the junk yard this morning, which is the metal tube that connects the rubber hose off the PCV valve in the oil cap to the back of the carb. I don't know why I didn't catch this earlier but it happened.

In looking at the pictures below I'm guessing that the piece that is white and round is perhaps a vacuum assist of some type for the power brakes. In the next picture you can see it goes straight to the back of the carb where the PCV tube is suppose to go. So I've got few questions...

1. Am I identifying the white, round part correctly?

2. If so, is it hooked up where it should be?

3. If it is it would lead me to believe that I'm simply missing a T to tie both pieces in to the back of the carb. Correct?

4. If not, where is this line that is currently going in to the carb suppose to go? I haven't dug through brake diagrams yet.

Thanks!
