The adapter has spline drive onto the pump its self. There is also a large bearing. Would you all like other pictures? No prob at all if you do.

Thanks M1FF...I think I understand it now. However, if it's not too much of an inconvenience a picture would be helpful.

More pictures:
Top picture is the hub and area of the pump box where it is installed. The drive is transferred by the splines, like the rear of the gearbox to tail shaft.

Bottom picture is the hub nearly fully fitted to the pump. The bar flicks round (see top pix again) to lock the bearing in place. The car is then running on the boxes as if they were wheels but the only part turning is the pump inside the box.

Kinda safer l feel!!

Makes sense now...so is that a universal hub that accepts all models? And is it centrifugal force holds the car and wheel to the hub?

A picture sure cleans up the mental image!

Yes, it would seem that that system would be much more safe.

5 weird washer type things use the car's wheel nuts to hold the adapter to the car's hub. They have a selection of rings to keep everything concentric. If the alignment is out you get a vibration.

Thanks for the explanation M1FF! By the way, what interested you in the Daimler cars?

I had a Series 1 XJ6 in England and got involved with the Post Vintage car movement here. When the Daimler S1's came up I could not resist. What a mug!
